Wine advent calendars don't come more crowd-pleasing than this offering from Virgin Wines. It's packed with 24 mini bottles of red, white, rosé, and sparkling wine from a variety of global producers, including a crisp South African chenin blanc, juicy Portuguese red, and a gorgeous Australian sparkling blend that'll wash away any misguided Chardonnay stigma with every sip. 

Each wine comes in a 20cl bottle, apart from one full-size 75cl red for Christmas day – a rich and spicy Australian shiraz that'll pair perfectly with your post-lunch cheeseboard. One thing to note is that this calendar is on the bulky side, so if space is an issue this may not be for you. Otherwise, this is a brilliant pick and mix, offering  a better variety of brands than any others on this list. 

Here's a good time in a box if ever we saw one! Prosecco is definitely the party fizz du jour but then again a good cava is often crisper and dryer with finer bubbles. Can't choose between the two? With this wine advent calendar, you don't have to. 

Spanish Cava behemoths Freixenet have included three 20cl bottles of Prosecco DOC and three sparkling Italian rosés along with three apiece of their classic Cordon Negro Cava, and Cordon Rosado Cava. Aldi is famed for its excellent value house range and savvy selection of fine wines by under-the-radar producers (seriously, try the Alpha Greek Chardonnay) So it follows that this wine advent calendar offers a budget-conscious option, as well as some interesting drinks to sup. 

It contains 24 mini bottles including red, white and rosés from household name JP Chanet, plus the Calvert Reserve Merlot Cabernet Sauvignon (a classic Bordeaux) and Brut d’Argent Chardonnay for bubbles. We would have loved to have seen Aldi dig into its impressively varied range a little more in terms of producers (the selection is dominated by three big-name brands) But, that lack of variety will appeal to wine drinkers who prefer consistency to experimentation. It's available online only from 30th October and, at this price, we predict a sell-out. 

Here's something a bit different. This clever Christmas tree-shaped calendar is crafted from wood with 24 cubby holes filled with mini wine bottles. This means you won't just have a wine advent calendar for 2022, it'll be for life! 

One thing we love about the Tipsy Tree is that it offers options for customization - it can come filled with wine, sparkling wine, spirits, or you can buy an empty tree and fill it yourself with a mixture. The 24 white and red wines included in this version are mostly crowd-pleasing classics including plenty of pinot grigio and merlot plus a silky Chilean malbec and spicy Aussie Shiraz. We love that this freestanding tree also makes one of the best Christmas decorations that you can keep re-using for years to come. 

This would be an ideal wine advent calendar for fans of those fruit-forward, easy-drinking new-world wines that make some of the best Christmas drinks for festive parties. While this calendar doesn't specifically market itself as new-world specific, every one of the 24-strong selections hails from sunny, non-European wine-producing climes including Chile, Australia, and South Africa. Expect plummy merlots, gooseberry sharp sauvignon, and everyone's favorite meat-friendly red, Argentinian malbec. 

Drinking aside, we like the look of this particular calendar. It's festive without being garish and won't jar with your seasonal decor. Like most alcohol advent calendars, it's a fairly sizeable box (all the better to pack in 24 187ml bottles) but it's also pretty robust-looking and will sit nicely beside the tree without falling over or getting in the way.
