Joanna Lumley interview for woman&home

Happy times
My idea of having fun is someone saying, "Have a glass of Champagne" at the wrong time! There's something about one glass of Champagne that feels naughty.

The simple thing most guaranteed to make me feel good is the doorbell going and seeing my son and his family there – Jamie, his wife Tessa, and my granddaughters Alice and Emily.

I'm lucky that both my husband and have such full lives that we are never bored with each other. Visiting a gorgeous restaurant with him once in a while and just being with him – it feels exciting.

I'd describe myself as a saver, but just sometimes I can spend like a kicking horse! Ryman is the one shop I can't go past without going into. I just can't resist lovely stationery.

I think I'm a spiritual person. I don't really go to church often when services are on, but I like going in when they are empty and quiet, and just sitting there and thinking for a little while.

My latest role
My strongest belief is my respect and love for nature. That's why I agreed to become ambassador for Plan A.

I love the fact that M&S is aiming for the moon with this. They've set themselves the goal of being the most sustainable major retailer.

We have developed into a very disposable culture. The statistics are extraordinary. Despite the fact there are charity shops, we still throw 50 per cent of stuff we don't want away.

The concept of Shwopping is so clever, I think. The idea is that every time someone goes shopping, they can take an unwanted item of clothing and pop it in the recycling bin in their M&S store for Oxfam.

Amazingly, even old socks or tights can be used. They will be broken down and recycled, and turned into new textiles. So, open old drawers in your house and bring out your laddered tights!

Being British
I've got out my flags to decorate the house for the Jubilee. On the day of the flotilla, we're having lunch with friends who have a house overlooking the river. It's all going to be gorgeous.

I love our royal family. I love the Queen for being rock solid and unswerving. I'm a real monarchist.

As Brits, we love a do, don't we? I adore our national celebrations. If I see a gold coach, you almost need to put me in a straitjacket, I get so excited.
