You’d love… A getaway at a bargain price (under £100,000)
LISBON, PORTUGAL This beguiling capital city is as desirable as ever – and still expensive. But if you’re up for a project, you can find a two-bedroom apartment in need of renovation 15 minutes from the central Basílica de Estrela for about £65,000-£80,000. Direct flights from the UK in under three hours.
GOZO, MALTA This is Malta’s sister island, which is still rural and relatively unspoilt. With stunning countryside and seascapes, it’s the perfect place to buy a holiday home either in the form of an apartment with seaviews or an idyllic farmhouse with pool. £95,000 (135,000) will get you a three-bedroom maisonette in Ghajnsielem. Flights to Malta in under 3 hours, then a 40-minute bus or cab to the Gozo Ferry (runs every 45 minutes).
You’d love… A city apartment by the sea (under £200,000)
TAVIRA, PORTUGAL The real Portugal, away from the rest of the tourist-packed Algarve. Tavira is a cobbled city straddling a tidal river on the eastern Algarve with traditional food and a spectacular beach. Prices are from £85,000 (€120,000) for a one-bed apartment to £185,000 (€260,000) for a four-bed townhouse. Regular flights to Faro from UK airports (under three hours).
BENAHAVIS, SPAIN An unspoilt traditional village in the hills, known for its cuisine, 7km from the coast and a 15-minute drive from Marbella on the Costa del Sol. Prices from £50,000 for a one-bedroom apartment. Several flights a day from the UK taking under three hours to reach Malaga.
You’d love… A villa with a pool near the sea (under £500,000)
MENTON, FRANCE Medieval streets and sea views in the former home city of Jean Cocteau, known for its lemons, around 15 minutes from the French border with Italy. Perhaps the only place on the Cote d’Azur that you can still pick up a three-bedroom villa with a pool for £400,000-£500,000. Half an hour drive / train from Nice airport (regular flights under two hours from the UK).
