Should people take a test to show they’re competent before serving on a jury? …Today’s debate

Following the news that the jury in the trial of Vicky Pryce, the ex-wife of former MP Chris Huhne, was dismissed yesterday, a lot of questions are being asked about the suitability of those called to jury service.

The judge expressed grave concerns that the jurors had not understood the case after they sent him ten questions about key aspects of this rather simple case which he said showed basic lack of understanding.

Miss Pryce is alleged to have perverted the course of justice after taking her then-husband’s speeding points 10 years ago.

But after more than 13 hours of deliberation, the judge, Mr Justice Sweeney, sent the 12 jurors home after they failed to reach a verdict

Should those called up for jury service take a language or intelligence test before attending a case? Should they have a basic knowledge of our legal system and how court proceedings work?
