It made national news last month when Loose Women star Saira Khan faced a shocking death threat on her personal Instagram account after posting a photo of herself in a bikini.
Since then, on a recent episode of Loose Women, Saira delivered an
impassioned and inspirational response to the person who threatened her life, defiantly
stating she “couldn’t not speak up”.
Speaking to her co-stars last Friday the 1st of September, she
said, “I’ve said a lot of things against extremism, but the things I
received… imagine the worst, vile comments and amongst them was a
death threat. What kind of world are we living in? This is Britain!”
She continued to reveal that in light of the threats, her husband even pleaded with her not to respond.
said, “He said, ‘You’ve got two children, you don’t know what nutters
are out there, you can’t speak about his – let it go’. He was so
concerned and I thought you’re right, but I can’t not speak up.”
want people to know that I am a Muslim woman, I want to wear a bikini –
I wear it with pride – I will pluck my eyebrows. Killing other people
in the name of religion is a sin, not plucking your eyebrows!”
despite the negativity, the photo also received a wave of positive
comments, with users coming forward to speak out in support of the
presenter and her defiant bikini-shot.
One fan wrote, “Saira you
are an amazing, inspirational and beautiful lady. ❤️”, while another
said, “I love how you are unapologetic about who you are. So many Muslim
women are oppressed and don’t even realise it.
“The more women
in the spotlight highlight how archaic and ridiculous these statements
are the better! I praise you, thank you for educating the world that you
can be both Muslim AND Free.”
The presenter, who regularly stars as a guest panellist on the popular daytime TV show, posted a laid-back shot of herself relaxing in a bikini whilst on holiday in Hvar, Croatia, with her family.
The death threat happened after Khan, a Muslim, shared the picture in response to a comment from a Muslim teacher from Sydney, who stated that it was sinful for women of that specific faith to pluck their eyebrows, according to the Muslim teaching haram.
Saira posted a defiant caption alongside her bikini shot, saying “I woke up to news that A Muslim Preacher is saying that “plucking eyebrows” for Muslim women is a sin – here’s my response – kiss my 🍑 you backward prehistoric dinosaur!
But sadly, the tounge-in-cheek photo received a myriad of negative comments. However, one in particular stood out and understandably left Saira horrified, as an Instagram user threatened her life over the revealing photo.
The terrifying comment, which threatened “If you value your life keep the f*** out of Islam”, has since been deleted by the social media site.
It read, “Keep your f****** mouth shut! Your not a Muslim nor do you represent anything to do with Islam!!! Your white masters have given you what you desire as a sell out reporter!!! If you value your life keep the f*** out of Islam.”
Feeling understandably shaken by the comment left on her social media, Saira then took to Twitter to report the user to the police. She tweeted the accused’s Twitter handle to the Metropolitan police, suggesting they may want to “check it out”.
Suggesting the report was being followed up by the police, the Met Contact centre responded, “Hi Saira, pls DM us so we can take some further details. Thanks”
