The Gustav Sonata is the heartbreaking new novel and a story of betrayal, the struggle for happiness and the healing power of friendship. Set in “neutral” Switzerland before, during and after the Second World War, it’s about a passionate friendship between two boys, Gustav and Anton, which threatens to destroy them both. Anton is a talented musician whose hopes for a career as a concert pianist are brought to nothing by his debilitating stage fright. It falls to Gustav, who has to console Anton and seek out the right path for their lives to follow. Fierce, astringent, profoundly tender, Rose Tremain’s beautifully orchestrated novel asks the question, what does it do to a person, or to a country, to persue an eternal quest for neutrality, while all life’s hopes and passions continually press upon the borders and beat upon the gate?
