The White House have released the official portrait of Melania Trump as First Lady and everyone is talking about it. Although the First Lady looks very glamorous, people are commenting about the obvious use of airbrushing and questioning its unconventional style. The 46-year-old former model and mother of one, looks ready for business wearing a chic black blazer with her arms crossed – a pose that draws attention to the huge wedding ring on her left hand.
Many have suggested the excessive airbrushing represents a model shot far more than the First Lady of the United States. The photographer, Regine Mahaux, has photographed the Trumps on several occasions.
If we hadn’t been told the picture was taken in The White House, it would be difficult to depict where exactly Melania is. The First Lady fills the whole frame, there is no indication of her connection to the White House as a home or even her role as wife to the president. This could be due to the fact she has not chosen it as her home, instead preferring to stay at her New York residence rather than moving to Washington DC with her husband.
Many have also speculated that Melania’s portrait is another nod to former first lady, Nancy Reagan – much like several of the outfits she has worn to date. Both images share a similar background and both women wore a bow around their neck for the historical picture.
As is with all these things, people have wasted no time in comparing the image to Melania’s predecessor, Michelle Obama’s – which was shot in 2009. Michelle’s portrait was taken in the Blue Room at The White House. Decidedly less formal, it captured the popular First Lady subtly leaning on a table, next to a floral display – giving us a rare glimpse into the grandest home in America. However, this too was not free from criticism, at the time many complained that Michelle’s sleeveless dress was inappropriate.
