On Monday, the world devastatingly experienced yet another horrific terrorist attack, when a gunman, Stephen Paddock, launched gunfire on some 600 concert-goers at a country music event, Route 91, in the city of Las Vegas.
At the time of reporting, 59 people are said to have died, while 525 people have been injured in the horrendous incident.
The awful crime has lead to the resurgence of the debate surrounding gun crime and the laws concerning the possessions of weapons in the US. Understandably, many have suggested that the only way to stop these shootings occurring is to have tighter restrictions on guns.
However, one man, live on Good Morning Britain, disagreed with his idea – leading to a heated debate with co-host of the programme, Piers Morgan.
Pro-gun campaigner Dan Roberts was being interviewed on the show, and maintained that he hoped “nothing is done” about guns in the US, which lead to a furious rebuttal from Piers.
Viewers expressed their shock at Robert’s stance, including TV presenter Lorriane Kelly, who told the Good Morning Britian panel she was “furious’ watching the interview. Lorraine made an appearance on the show via a live video link.
She said, “I was watching that interview that you both did with the man from the IRA, and I just couldn’t get my head around what he was saying.
“He actually said ‘Hopefully nothing will change’. He said that to you! And I was shouting at the television.
“No wonder you got so irate, it was absolutely ridiculous.
“Where an earth do you start having a sensible, reasonable debate with somebody who is coming at you from that stance? It’s impossible.
“And you know, that this is going to happen again, and every time it happens it gets worse.”
During the interview, Piers asked campaigner Dan how he could justify the Las Vegan gunman’s ability to buy 42, semi-automatic weapons. But Dan simply replied, “Piers, there you go again – there is nothing exceptionally high-powered about an AR-15.
“In fact, it shoots the most low powered centre fire rifle cartridge available in the market at the moment.”
Piers angrily hit back, saying “The man just shot 600 people! Of course they’re high-powered! We heard the bullets go off ourselves! We heard them firing, Dan! You’re talking complete and utter nonsense.”
Pro-gun advocate Dan continued to say that the guns are not to blame for the actions of shooters in America, and that it’s the fault of the people who use them.
GMB host Piers then continued his fierce criticism of the man’s views, exclaiming, “Time after time after these massacres, you come on this programme – you used to come on my programme in America – and you look us in the eye and say, ‘The only answer is to do nothing – there’s nothing wrong with guns, it’s the people!'”
“Because of your insane gun laws he can arm himself with 42 weapons and unload six hundred bullets which hit Americans and people travelling from around the world, leaving 59 people dead.”
What is your opinion on America’s gun laws?
