‘Take control of your money!’: Emma Grede urges women to stop ‘outsourcing financial responsibility’ to men for these very important reasons

Entrepreneur Emma Grede has appealed to women everywhere to take, and maintain control of their finances, and to "stop outsourcing them to a man."

During an appearance on Loose Women, Emma shone an important light on something a lot of women might find familiar: That it's very easy to fall into traditional gender roles in a relationship where a man cares for the finances and women take up the emotional and domestic slack.

However, the businesswoman wants women to stop doing this, straight away. "All women have to take responsibility for their own financial wellness," she begins.

Emma continues, "This is not about how much money you've got - in fact, the less you have, the more you need to take responsibility for it."

Making the point that "money isn't just money," she reveals what else it stands for. This includes "your ability to live well," "what you get to do," and "your freedom."

For women who have never looked after their finances before, Emma says that those who don't understand how their mortgage works, what the money in their household goes towards and how things like the economy affect their personal financial matters, "You give away so much choice."

She says that when it comes to money matters, to "outsource that to a man" is "like madness." She adds, "It's absolutely crazy, and we can't be doing it."

Emma explains, "I know too many women that have been left high and dry, not understanding anything about their finances because somebody leaves them or there's been a death."

It's a very familiar story, and when the segment of her making her point was shared to Instagram, it gathered hundreds of comments from those who knew somebody who had experienced what Emma was talking about.

One person wrote, "I am a financial planner, and I can’t stress enough the need for financial education for women and the younger generation. A top tip is always to have a running away fund."

Another added, "Her message on this is spot on. This is so much bigger than whether you're single or married or not, it's just the reality. Every woman should be aware of her finances."

Another commenter simply said, "This is so true, and I was one of those women left high and dry," while another shared the lesson she'd learnt, adding, "My first husband paid all the bills and when he left me I had no idea what to do. So I learned about it and 21 years later, remarried, I still control all the finances."
