Eamonn Holmes criticised by This Morning viewers for this comment about wife Ruth Langsford

This Morning's Eamonn Holmes landed himself in hot water with some ITV viewers yesterday, following a tongue-in-cheek comment to wife Ruth Langsford.

The 59-year-old TV host left fans gobsmacked after appearing to call his wife of almost nine years “fat”.

Speaking on yesterday’s episode of the hit breakfast show, the couple were discussing healthy resolutions for the new year.

Revealing his wife has been using a dietary tracking app, Eamonn said, “Ruth has done the typical trap where she said lose weight – obviously.

“She’s got one of these app things that told her how many calories she’s restricted to, bearing in mind her bulk, how much intake she can have a day.”

After 58-year-old Ruth revealed that she was only supposed to consume 1,200 calories a day due to her “bulk, age and height”, Eamonn gave a pretty controversial response.

“That’s because you’re very fat, that’s why,” he chimed in.

Brushing off the comment, Ruth then jokingly scolded her husband, saying, “Oh my goodness, you’re going to get ‘stop being mean to your wife’.”

Digging himself a deeper hole, the TV personality responded to Ruth, “I’m only stating the facts.”

Whilst it’s clear Eamonn and Ruth were simply sharing a playful joke, some viewers have been left slightly unimpressed.

Calling Eamonn out on the potentially hurtful comment, one user said, ‘Eamonn I can’t believe you called Ruthie fat! She is lovely and I think you and I both know you are punching above your weight!’

While another added, ‘@EamonnHolmes you are lucky @RuthieeL loves you and she’s a lovely lady tut tut …. happy new year to you both!!!”

However, others defended the host. One said, ‘I wouldn’t call my wife Fat as she’d probably kill me however I think @EamonnHolmes and @RuthieeL have a relationship where they can tease.’
