A mattress protector can be a truly transformative layer, but you won’t fully appreciate it until you’ve slept on a really good one. That’s why I wanted to put Dunelm's affordable Fogarty Temperature Balance Mattress Protector through its paces. It pairs pure cotton comfort with clever cooling technology, promising a simple way to upgrade your bed without replacing your entire sleep setup.

I've been telling everyone about Dunelm’s bedding this Spring. It's something of a hidden gem, bringing together heritage names with accessible pricing. The Fogarty range, in particular, draws on over 100 years of expertise, which gave me high hopes that the Fogarty Temperature Balance Mattress Protector could compete with the best mattress protectors on the market, especially for those of us who run warm at night.

I’ve been sleeping on it for several weeks now, alongside our expert tester Sally, to see how it performs in real life: from hot, restless nights to everyday comfort. If you’re wondering how to sleep in the heat (without investing in a full cooling mattress), this is an underrated way to make a big change to your sleep.

Who would the Dunelm Fogarty Temperature Balance Mattress Protector suit?

There are three standout features of the Fogarty Temperature Balance Mattress Protector: its HYDROCOOL technology woven into the fibres; its ability to absorb moisture from night sweats; and its incredibly affordable price point. Together, these make it a particularly strong choice for hot sleepers, especially those who are dealing with hormonal temperature fluctuations.

From my own testing, I found the Fogarty Temperature Balance Mattress Protector consistently comfortable and reassuringly breathable, but it was Sally’s experience that really underscored its value. She struggles with frequent night sweats and told me, “I felt much more in control overnight. Normally, I’m up at 3am throwing the covers off. And whilst I was still waking up, it isn't in the same intense, unbearable way that I have been with previous mattress protectors.” So, if you want a cooling, moisture-managing layer without spending on premium prices, this is the one for you.

Unboxing the Dunelm Fogarty Temperature Balance Mattress Protector

Like most mattress protectors, the Fogarty Temperature Balance Mattress Protector arrives folded inside plastic packaging. While I always prefer to see more sustainable alternatives (some brands are moving towards reusable fabric cases), this is at least recyclable at larger supermarkets.

On a more positive note, the protector itself was carefully rolled rather than tightly creased, so it looked fresh straight out of the packaging. There were no chemical odours either, something I always check for, which meant it was ready for bed straight away.

How does the Dunelm Fogarty Temperature Balance Mattress Protector fit on the bed?

The Fogarty Temperature Balance Mattress Protector is designed to fit mattresses up to 30cm deep, which is generous enough for most modern setups, even if you’re layering with a topper or electric blanket.

In my case, the elasticated skirt stretched easily over each corner and, once in place, it stayed put overnight. Importantly, there wasn’t excess fabric bunching underneath the sheet, which is something that can completely ruin comfort, so it felt smooth, secure, and neatly tailored to the bed.

What is the Dunelm Fogarty Temperature Balance Mattress Protector like to sleep on?

A good mattress protector should be virtually undetectable, because its main purpose is to protect the mattress underneath. In my and our expert tester's experience, the Fogarty Temperature Balance Mattress Protector absolutely delivers on that front. I couldn’t feel it beneath my sheets at all and don't think I would have known it was there if it wasn't for a subtle coolness when getting into bed.

Sally reported a similar experience after extended testing: “Sleeping on it feels cooler at first and I had generally been pleased with how it helped me to sleep. Compared to mattress toppers that claim to be cooling, but which cost three times the price, it’s exceptional.”

While it didn’t completely eliminate night sweats, it noticeably reduced their intensity and left both of us feeling fresher by morning, which, for many women navigating hormonal changes, is a meaningful improvement.

We also carried out a spill test, despite the Fogarty Temperature Balance Mattress Protector not being marketed as waterproof. Impressively, it absorbed liquid quickly and gave me around five minutes before any moisture reached the other side of the protection. That is plenty of time and absorption for light perspiration and the odd coffee or wine incident (which I have been known to have).

The Fogarty Temperature Balance Mattress Protector is wonderfully low-maintenance. It’s machine washable, so you can simply add it to your regular laundry routine without fuss.

In testing, it washed and dried well, maintaining its shape and softness, and proved to be a durable layer that holds up under frequent use, which is exactly what you want from something designed to sit at the heart of your bed setup.
