Travel: Hever Castle, Kent

  • Jane Hayward

Fancy an autumn getaway? Why not go back in time at Anne Boleyn's childhood home, Hever Castle?

Hever Castle, Anne Boleyn’s childhood home, has long been a highlight of Kent’s most idyllic corner. Now it’s offering a self-catering house within the grounds for a grand family get-together.

Part of the early 20th-century Astor Wing, Medley Court house has space for seven people in four bedrooms. Each beautifully restored room has original oil paintings, handcrafted wood panelling and chandeliers dangling over canopied beds.

Tour the castle’s Tudor tapestries and ghoulish torture instruments. You can explore the gardens after visitors have gone home, as well as enjoying daytime activities, like foraging and guided lakeside tours, during the castle’s Discover Autumn weekend (17 and 18 October).

At £1,300 for three nights, it’s not cheap, but it’s worth it. Call 01732-861800 or visit hevercastle.co.uk
