The Tempest Arms

  • Jane Hayward

Want to explore the beautiful Yorkshire Dales? Make your base at The Tempest Arms for a fantastic break

The Yorkshire Dales’ best value lies close to the Lancashire border, where a sociable mix of walkers, weekenders and wedding guests makes the Tempest Arms near Skipton an appealing bolthole for two.

CHECK IN: The best rooms have hot tubs on outdoor decks with views of misty, mellow countryside. L’Occitane smellies and homemade flapjack await in all.

WHAT TO DO: Whether you’re browsing boutiques or Mill Bridge’s award-winning pork pie shop Stanforth’s, Skipton’s shopping is a real pleasure (don’t miss Saturday’s market). Hop onto the Settle Carlisle railway (settle-carlisle.co.uk) for a heart-melting trip across the Dales, or drive to Harrogate’s designer stores, 40 minutes away.

EAT AND DRINK: In the inn’s dining room, a daily-changing menu might offer Moroccan lamb or local black pudding on apple chutney, around £20pp for three courses with local fine cask ale available too. It’s always busy, so book before you arrive.

WHAT IT COSTS: Doubles from £84.95 B&B.
