THEATRE: About Bill

  • Lorraine Conway

An engaging, amusing and moving one-woman show

If you've seen the West End production of Mamma Mia, then there's a good chance you'll recognise Kim Ismay, who recently returned to the role of impossibly glamorous Tanya, after previously playing the part for three years. Her latest project is quite a different proposition - a one-woman, one-act musical. The eponymous jazz musician Bill, is portrayed through Kim's stories and songs, and she paints a detailed and compelling picture of his life, which takes him from Blackpool in the 1930s to London in the 1990s. We learn about the women Bill loves, the music he makes and the hearts he breaks. Kim should be reason enough to see this production, but equally exciting is the involvement of Matthew Strachan, who provides music and lyrics - he's best known for composing the music for the TV quiz show ‘Who Wants To Be A Millionaire?' You won't leave this show any richer financially, but you'll certainly feel enriched by taking a funny and moving journey through this character's remarkable life.
