The Heart of the Great Alone: Scott, Shackleton and Antarctic Photography

An intimate collection of photographs to mark the 100th anniversary of Captain Scott’s Antarctic adventure

Buckingham Palace is making a name for itself as a key London exhibition venue. This year's State Room Summer Opening saw Kate Middleton's Sarah Burton wedding dress on display and, although the show has now closed, October 21 marks the start of an equally worthy collection, this time in The Queen's Gallery.

The Heart of the Great Alone: Scott, Shackleton and Antarctic Photography will run to 15 April, and is a remarkable collection of intimate images, taken during the Antarctic expeditions of 1910-1912 and 1914-1917, to mark the centenary of Captain Robert Flacon Scott's voyage to the South pole.

The pictures are part of a collection presented to King George V and were taken by official photographers Herbert Ponting and Frank Hurley. They provide an artistic portrayal of the emotions and activities encountered on the expeditions, capturing the raw and unforgiving climate alongside the relationship dynamics within the groups and their strong bond with the expedition animals.

Eye opening, awe inspiring and truly breathtaking, this is an intense and unique exhibition!
