Claudia Sylvester talks about her aunt's battle with breast cancer

Claudia on her aunt, Jan:

Ever since I can remember, my Auntie Jan has always been special. Growing up, she had a rambling country house where we’d spend every summer and it was like being dropped in the Garden of Eden.

When I was 14, Jan became my godmother. Our bond became even more special. I felt safe in the knowledge that if anything ever happened to me, she’d look after me.

Jan was my rock when I lost my brother Mark ten years ago. He suffered from depression and took his life. I couldn’t really talk about it and became very isolated. But I always felt this unspoken support from Jan; that I could call her any time.

When Jan was diagnosed with breast cancer, it completely rocked my world. I thought, “I can’t lose you too.” But she didn’t let us feel sorry for her. The way she dealt with it was humbling.

We have a natural appreciation of each other. There’s something very special about our relationship whereby we just understand each other. I think we recognise ourselves in each other. She seems to think that I cope with everything really well and I think the same about her.

Jan on Claudia:

Claudia was very strong for me when I was going through breast cancer. I remember watching her on QVC and she talked about her work with Breast Cancer Care. She said, “This is for my Auntie Jan.” It was a very poignant moment for me. Things like that make a big difference when you’re ill.

I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2003. At first, I didn’t tell anybody, not even my husband. But, gradually, as I got used to the idea, I felt ready to tell my family. I just couldn’t bear for them to worry, especially considering how difficult it had been for Claudia since losing her brother.

I admire Claudia’s outlook on things. She’s always so happy, positive and capable. The things she does in her work life are fantastic too and make me really proud of her.

We share the same sense of humour. My husband Den and Claudia’s father are brothers. They’re both very grumpy and have a tough outer shell that’s hard to crack. Claudia and I are much freer and have a giggle at their stuffy ways. And we often laugh at our huge height difference!
