Ford Madox Brown: The Pre-Raphaelite Pioneer
Ford Madox Brown lived in Manchester for six years before his death in 1893 so the fact that the first exhibition of his work since 1964 is to be held there, is no surprise. From now to 29 January, The Manchester Art Gallery will play host to 140 of his most notable works, spanning from the late 1830s and his first apprentice pieces to the 12-painting series Manchester Murals, which depicts the history of the city. Artworks have been collated from both public and private collections worldwide so, for many, it's a rare opportunity to view.
Some of the pieces on show include Work and The Last of England, which are considered to be two of Brown's most prolific artworks. The exhibition will explore the way in which Brown rebelled against traditional methods to create his unique painting style and his contribution to the development of pre-Raphaelitism.
