DVD: The Kids Are All Right

  • Henry Ellis

An honest look at family life in this Golden Globe-winning comedy!

The Allgood's are just like any other family with teenage kids - they have their highs and lows, and the stresses of careers and high school. But what makes this family different to most, is that both parents are women - and the children are a result of a sperm donor.

So when their daughter Joni (Mia Wasikowska, Alice in Wonderland) contacts her and her brother's (Josh Hutcherson) biological father Paul (Mark Ruffalo, Shutter Island), the life of this family unit is thrown into disarray.

As the family adapts to Paul's new and unexpected presence in their lives, mothers Nic (Oscar-nominated Annete Bening) and Jules (Bafta-nominated Julianne Moore) face even more challenges - both within their own relationship and the one they share with their children.

What unfolds is a hilarious and touching tale, beautifully directed, with a fine ensemble cast. Perhaps its greatest accomplishment is making the idea of a lesbian nuclear family seem so normal and run of the mill; within five minutes of the opening credits you can see it is just like any other family. An excellent film, and more than worthy of your attention.
