DVD: Life
The BBC's latest natural history endeavour is a breathtaking collection of unparalleled footage from the world of animals, showing them in the wild as they fight for survival. Currently screening on BBC 1 on Monday nights, the 10-part series, narrated by Sir David Attenborough, was over four years in the making, and takes in an incredible 150 different locations. It delivers a powerful impression of the varied, interesting ways animals struggle and fight to live on our planet.
The focus is on extreme animal behaviour. From cheetahs working in a pair to bring down prey double their size to a huge number of Humboldt squid collecting together for night time hunting, this is wildlife footage at its best from creatures all around the world. Other arresting sights that Life captures are polar bears feeding on a whale and a billion butterflies cloaking a forest in Mexico - true spectacles.
Its combination of scientific know-how and research, along with incredibly detailed camera-work makes for enthralling TV and - thanks to the DVD release - it's something to be enjoyed and marvelled at, over and over.
