Prince Harry's Netflix deal has come under scrutiny in light of reports that The Crown will recreate the infamous Princess Diana interview with Martin Bashir.

Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's ties with Netflix have been criticized following recent reports that The Crown will cover Princess Diana's controversial BBC interview with Martin Bashir.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex signed a multi-million dollar contract with the US streaming giant in September 2020, in yet another move to distance themselves from the British monarchy and solidify their presence in the Hollywood elite. The lucrative business deal enables the couple to create original content under their media company, Archwell Productions. Harry and Meghan have already announced their first Netflix series, 'Heart of Invictus', which is expected to be released at some point next year.

The couple's working relationship with the digital platform has confused some fans following reports that The Crown Season Five will include scenes from Princess Diana's tell-all interview with Martin Bashir in 1995.

The controversial Panorama special has been widely criticized by both the public and the Royal Family in light of revelations that the interview was obtained under 'false pretenses'. A 2021 independent inquiry found that Bashir behaved in 'a deceitful way' to convince Diana to appear on the program, using 'fake documents' that indicated payments had been made to keep her under surveillance.

The Royal Family has since come out against the interview, with Prince William revealing that its 'lies' worsened his parents' relationship. The Duke of Cambridge also dismissed the "legitimacy" of the program, urging for it to "never be aired again."

The news that the interview will be dramatized in the next season of The Crown, which stars Elizabeth Debicki as Princess Diana, has reportedly left William feeling 'frustrated' at Netflix for its 'commercialization' of his mother's pain. The BBC, which holds the copyright to the interview, has confirmed that it has had 'no interaction' with the streaming platform.

Harry's deal with Netflix has naturally come under fire following the news, with some royal fans questioning what The Crown's decision means for his future at the company.
