Kensington Palace have officially confirmed that the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge will be embarking on a new royal tour, set to take place in July 2017. And the visit may well signal the couples foray into the world of Brexit…
So where are the couple off to this summer? Prince William and Catherine will tour Poland and Germany later this year, at the request of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office. But we don’t know yet if adorable Prince George and Princess Charlotte will be joining their parents overseas, as they did in Canada in September 2016.
But could this royal trip signal William and Catherine’s continuing venture into politics in the wake of Brexit? Boris Johnson, Foreign Secretary, apparently asked the couple to visit the two EU countries, amid claims that the duo are set to become the UK’s ‘Brexit Ambassadors’.
And this could well be true, as, during the trip, the royals are expected to pay a visit to the German Chancellor Angela Merkel, whilst in the capital city Berlin. Apparently, the couple will meet with her in the hopes that they may be able to smooth the way for a trade deal between the countries in an uncertain post-Brexit landscape.
Previously, William has dabbled in politics, when he spoke out in support of a positive relationship between Britain and the rest of the EU following the controversial Brexit decision. In the summer of 2016, the Duke maintained that the ‘depth of Britain’s friendship with Germany’ would not change, following the vote to leave the EU.
During their time in Poland and Germany, Catherine and William are also expected to meet with the Polish Prime Minister, Beata Szydlo, and make a visit to the concentration camp, Auschwitz. This tour will mark the Duchess’ first official trip to Germany, and the couples first visit to Poland on behalf of the British government.
This European trip is the second of two royal tours pencilled in for the Duke and Duchess in 2017, for the moment. It was recently revealed that the pair would be heading to Paris in March, for a two-day visit that would signal the first time Prince William has made an official trip to the country since his mother’s death there 20 years ago. He has visited previously for rugby and football matches, and has made unofficial visits in the years since 1997, but this will be the first official trip there with Catherine by his side.
It seems the couples royal visits to Europe won’t stop there either. The Daily Mail has suggested that the Duke and Duchess may well be off to other countries, including Italy towards the end of March. So watch this space – and prepare for some adorable pictures of the couple…
