No doubt about it, Madonna’s world tour of 2012 was the biggest earning live event by a mile! 54-year-old Madge’s MDNA road show grossed a cool £182.4 million, outstripping the number-two event, Bruce Springsteen’s tour, by some £53 million.
Other acts, including Coldplay, Elton John, Paul McCartney and Cirque du Soleil just couldn’t get close to the Material Girl, though also coming in the top 15 highest earning world tours of last year.
So, people around the world are clearly happy to pay (often a lot of money) to watch Madonna perform. But watching her perform so often seems to involve controversy these days, doesn’t it?
Remember all the headlines from last year: causing offence in more than one host country because she revealed too much flesh; prompting outrage elsewhere by pulling out a fake gun on stage; and upsetting politicians in numerous other places with her inflammatory on-stage statements (dubbing Barack Obama a ‘black Muslim’ for starters!).
While Madge clearly remains the queen of pop, we can’t help wishing she’d stick to the singing rather than working on the next scandal…Then again, perhaps without the shocking headlines, she wouldn’t draw such a big crowd – her scandalous behaviour might just be a very shrewd marketing tool.
What do you think – is Madge worth her millions? And are her outrageous antics merely a means of boosting ticket sales? Tell us your thoughts in the comments box below or join the debate in our forums now.
