Actress Gwyneth Paltrow opened up about her experience with the perimenopause in a recent video for her lifestyle website, Goop, revealing the tough side effects.
Gwyneth revealed that often, she'll feel 'furious' for no reason, as well as going through many other, physical changes.
She said, "I think when you get into perimenopause, you notice a lot of changes. I can feel the hormonal changes happening: the sweating, the moods. You're just like all of a sudden furious for no reason."
She also discussed how she'd seen her own mother go through the menopause - but that for her, it came with some rather mixed emotions.
"I remember when my mother went through menopause and it was like such a big deal and there was grief around it for her and all of these emotions," Gwyneth said.
But for the singer and actress, it seems the time is now to dispel the taboo surrounding the menopause. "I think menopause gets a really bad rap and needs a bit of rebranding," she said.
As such, Gwyneth has take her own steps to 'rebrand' the menopause, creating a supplement pack, named Madame Ovary, for menopausal women on her website Goop.
The perimenopause is best understood as a transitional phase of life, prior to the beginning of the menopause. While women typically begin the life stage at the age of 51, the perimenopause can begin years before that, and can come with its own set of perimenopause symptoms.
Women will most notably see their periods become irregular, but we can only assume that we're in the menopause once we haven't had a period for a year.
