One of the smash hits at the box office last year was J.K. Rowling’s film Fantastic Beasts and Where To Find Them, starring Eddie Redmayne as Newt Scamander, and Colin Farrell/Johnny Depp as the evil villain.
The film also struck gold at awards season, winning a BAFTA for Best Production Design, and an Oscar for Best Costume Design.
And it’s confirmed that there will be at least five more installments of the Fantastic Beasts franchise for us to look forward too. J.K. Rowling has confirmed that she’s already written the second one, and seemed to suggest in a cryptic tweet in February that filming had begun…
Rowling sent fans into a frenzy with the sneak peak – although it didn’t reveal too much about the actual contents of the script.
So what else do we know about the forth-coming second installment? When is it out – and what’s it all about?
Here are 5 things we already know about the newest magical movie…
1. It won’t be set in New York City
The first adventure of Newt Scamander and his mythical creatures (or fantastic beasts) was set against the backdrop of the Big Apple – a twist on the quintessentially English Harry Potter films.
But now, it seems the Fantastic Beasts gang are set to make a return to this side of the pond, as the new film will be set in Hertfordshire, and Paris.
2. Some of the original characters from the first film will return
Tina (Katherine Waterston), Queenie (Alison Sudol) and muggle Jacob Kowalski (Dan Fogler), from the first film, will return for the sequel. Johnny Depp is also expected to make an appearance – although it hasn’t been officially confirmed. Tina and Newt ended the first film on a romantic note – so could this be the film where their romance blossoms?
3. Or will there be a new love interest for Newt?
A character called Leta Lestrange, played by Zoe Kravitz, will make an appearance in the newest flick. She played a slightly obscure role in the first film, appearing as just a photo in Newt’s shed – which he quickly tried to cover up when Tina discovered it. Perhaps we’ll find out more about this mysterious woman and her role in Ned’s life in the sequel…
4. Dumbledore will become part of the story
How could the esteemed wizard not be part of the newest magical film series? In the next Fantastic Beasts, he’ll appear as his younger self – although he may not be the wise, confident wizard we know and love. At a press conference, Rowling confirmed that “You will see Dumbledore as a younger man and quite a troubled man.”
5. Gellert Grindewald will become a major player soon
The infamous wizard was played by Colin Farrell, then Johnny Depp, in the first film (he was disguised as someone else for most of the film). And we haven’t seen the last of him yet. He’s one of the most powerful dark wizards in the entire universe (aside from Voldemort), but used to be close with Dumbledore as a child. Apparently, the sequel will focus more on that complex relationship.
J. K. Rowling has also confirmed that the entire franchise will end in 1945, which is when the two wizards eventually duelled – and Dumbledore succeeded, bringing an end to Grindewald’s tyrannical reign on the wizarding world.
