Peaky Blinders star Helen McCrory has died of cancer aged 52

Her husband, actor Damian Lewis, confirmed the sad news in a statement on Twitter

Actor Helen McCrory has sadly died of cancer at the age of 52, her husband actor Damian Lewis has confirmed.

"I’m heartbroken to announce that after a heroic battle with cancer, the beautiful and mighty woman that is Helen McCrory has died peacefully at home, surrounded by a wave of love from friends and family," he wrote in a statement on Twitter.

"God we love her and know how lucky we are to have had her in our lives. She blazed so brightly. Go now, Little One, into the air, and thank you."

The couple were married in 2007 and had two children together.

McCrory was probably best known for her role as the Shelby family matriarch Polly Gray in the BBC drama Peaky Blinders, as well as Narcissa Malfoy in the Harry Potter movie franchise. She also had roles in the James Bond film Skyfall and The Queen, in which she played Cherie Blair.

Following news of her death, fans and famous faces have taken to social media to pay tribute to the star. The Reverend Richard Coles wrote, "Very sorry to hear the death of Helen McCrory, such a brilliant actor; heartfelt condolences to Damian Lewis, their children, and all who loved her."

Fellow actor Ben Willbond added, "Heartbroken at the news that Helen McCrory has died. She was so so brilliant when she came to work on Bill. Funny, generous, some wicked stories. I was in awe. My heart goes out to Damian and their family. Rest in peace."
