Find out why Tobago is topping our 2019 wishlist…
Nestled between the Caribbean and North Atlantic seas, Tobago is a jewel in the Caribbean’s crown. And this beautiful island of warm welcomes, stunning sunsets and soft tropical breezes is also remarkably unspoilt.
Boasting a coastline dotted with palm-fringed beaches, it’s a nature-lover’s paradise with a rich cultural heritage. Whether you’re after rest and relaxation or watersports and exploring, there’s heaps to see and do.
Here’s why Tobago is our dream destination…
Its beaches are utterly sublime
For secluded bays and crystal clear water with shoals of tropical fish, Tobago is up there with the best. In fact there are 42 different types of sand on this tropical island, from the silver-white beaches along the Caribbean coast to the dark, volcanic sands of the North Atlantic side.
If you’re feeling adventurous, try your hand at watersports, such as diving, paddle-boarding, kayaking and boat-trips. And if you like to take things at a leisurely pace, a trip out in a glass-bottomed boat is a must. Love secluded beaches? One of our favourites has to be Englishman’s Bay.
You can get close to nature
As one of the world’s premier eco-tourism destinations, Tobago’s lush emerald forests include the oldest protected rainforest in the world, which is packed with coconut palms, papaya and mango trees.
It’s also a birdwatchers’ paradise with a remarkable 230 bird species. Take a tour with the island’s resident expert twitcher Newton George and he’ll show you where to spot hummingbirds and the cocrico, (Tobago’s national bird).
The joy of Tobago is you’re free to explore to your heart’s content – active holidaymakers will love hiking through the rainforest or taking a refreshing dip under a cascading waterfall.
The seas around Tobago offer a number of diving spots that are home to a diverse range of marine life. Its reefs are rich ecosystems, with pristine corals, steep rock walls covered in sponges and a myriad of creatures from delicate angelfish to sharks, turtles and even dolphins.
It’s beautifully romantic
Whether you’re celebrating a special anniversary, planning a a wedding or simply want to put romance back on the agenda, we can’t imagine a more beautiful place to be with someone special. Tobago’s Pigeon Point with its jetty stretching out across the beautiful beach into the azure water is just dreamy and strolling around the peaceful, tropical Botanical Gardens, which is transformed by lights at night, is just magical.
The people are incredibly welcoming
The warmth and hospitality of Tobago’s people is every bit as memorable as the beautiful scenery. You’ll be entreated to join in the island’s festivals and carnivals, regaled with tales about the island’s colonial past and encouraged to try the local dishes.
In fact, one thing every visitor raves about is the delicious cuisine served up in candlelit restaurants and beach bars. From Creole to Italian food, there’s something for every palette and budget (crab and dumplings are a must!).
There are 101 things to do
Yes, there really are 101 things to do on this diverse, unspoilt island – check them out at VisitTobago.gov.tt/gobeyond.
Our top picks include a visit to the Nylon Pool –a natural swimming pool of crystal clear water in the middle of ocean; Eden’s Door – a beautiful nature sanctuary where you can meditate under the stars and the picturesque Parlatuvier Bay on the Northwest coast, where the river meets the sea and small fishing boats bob on gentle lapping waves… Need we say more?
