Prince William’s sweet prediction for Kate Middleton was revealed during their engagement interview as he confessed that no one would be trying to “fill” Princess Diana’s shoes.
- During their 2010 engagement interview Prince William and Kate Middleton discussed the late Princess of Wales and her legacy.
- Prince William shared that “it’s about carving your own future” as he said Kate would do a “good job” as a senior royal.
- This royal news comes as Kate Middleton and Prince William are on break from royal duties after a “tense time” for George, Charlotte and Louis.
Shortly after their engagement was announced in 2010, Prince William and Kate Middleton got candid about their love story in an interview with ITV News' Tom Bradby. During this enlightening chat, Prince William’s heartbreaking admission that he gave his now-wife the chance to “back out” of royal life was revealed, whilst it emerged that Prince William and Kate’s first meeting ended with her “scuttling off” shyly. Since then their romance has gone from strength to strength and following the accession of King Charles, they’ve become the Prince and Princess of Wales.
Kate’s future in the Royal Family, which has now seen her succeed the late Princess Diana in the role of Princess of Wales was also discussed in the engagement interview. Here Prince William’s sweet prediction was revealed as he explained no one was trying to “fill” his late mother’s shoes…
Describing Princess Diana as the “most famous figure of our age”, Tom Bradby asked the Prince and Princess of Wales if that was “intimidating” or "worrying".
“Well, obviously I would love to have met her,” Kate began warmly. “And she’s obviously, she’s an inspirational woman to look up to.”
Prince William then added considerately, “There’s no pressure though. There’s no pressure because, like Kate said, it’s about carving your own future. No one’s going to try and fill my mother’s shoes and what she did is fantastic.”
It was here that Prince William’s sweet prediction was made - namely that his now-wife would go on to do a “great job” as Princess of Wales, whenever that time came.

“It’s about making your own future and your own destiny and Kate will do a very good job of that,” he said admiringly.
This sweet remark showcases Prince William’s strong support for his wife as she prepared to take on the huge responsibilities she now has. Reflecting on his words during the interview, author of Elizabeth the Queen, Sally Bedell Smith, has told Vogue that Kate is now “doing” exactly what her husband said she would.
“William emphasized that there was no pressure to fill his mother’s shoes and said that Kate would make her own future, and that’s what she’s doing,” Sally claimed. “They’ve had a vision for their role, initially as the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, but now as the Prince and Princess of Wales, that is very well thought out.”
Meanwhile, Kate went on to speak about how she values Prince William’s knowledge and support during a visit in June 2022.
During their trip to Cardiff Castle during the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee weekend, she was reportedly told she was going to be a “brilliant Princess of Wales”. In response, Kate is understood to have said, “I’m in good hands,” as she looked at her husband.
Months later in September 2022 the new Prince and Princess of Wales returned to Wales for their first visit there since taking on their new titles. For this special trip, Kate Middleton wore a bold red coat that was not only stunning but which wonderfully echoed the shade of red featured on the Welsh Flag.
