King Charles pays tribute to the most important lessons taught by his mother, the power of faith and service

King Charles’ first ever Christmas speech was a beautiful and powerful message on the power of faith and service, two pillars that were paramount to his mother’s life. In his moving address, Charles acknowledged the life of service his mother gave, and the importance of which she placed on her Christianity. However, Charles’ call was more encompassing of all religions, saying “whatever faith you have, or whether you have none, it is in this life-giving light, and with the true humility that lies in our service to others, that I believe we can find hope for the future.”

King Charles has made history today, delivering his first speech as monarch – and the first speech by a king in 70 years.

Charles’ moving speech, of course, touches on the life of his late mother. He spoke of her “belief in the power of that light was an essential part of her faith in God, but also her faith in people” – a faith he carries forward.

While celebrating the Christian origins of the Christmas message, Charles has set out his own path as king, calling on people of all faiths to keep believing in the power of service, and the light within others.

"I am standing here in this exquisite Chapel of St George at Windsor Castle, so close to where my beloved mother, the late Queen, is laid to rest with my dear father. I am reminded of the deeply touching letters, cards and messages which so many of you have sent my wife and myself and I cannot thank you enough for the love and sympathy you have shown our whole family.”
