Fans of Princess Diana excited to see her portrayed on the hit Netflix show The Crown will be sad to hear they’ll have to wait a bit longer…
The Crown has gained fans all over the world with its two first seasons documenting Queen Elizabeth II’s reign between XX, and excitement is building as we reach more recent times in season 3.
Of course one of the most exciting and anticipated character will be Princess Diana, and fans had been eagerly awaiting her debut in the next series.
However, it’s now been confirmed by casting director Nina Gold that the royal will only be introduced in season four. Bummer!
She told Vanity Fair, "Diana’s not in this season. When we do get to her, that is going to be pretty interesting."
Season three of the TV show will cover what is usually called the Wilson era, which refers to prime minister Harold Wilson, the prime minister from 1964 to 1970 and 1974 to 1976.
As Diana did not meet Prince Charles until 1977, when the royal was dating her older sister Sarah, it makes sense Diana will enter the show in season four.
Discussing the casting of the new characters, from the Duchess of Cornwall to Prince Charles, Nina said it gets increasingly more difficult as the show gets closer to more recent times.
“Not only are we casting real-life characters but as we get closer to the present day, many of these people are very much alive”, she said.
“So we have to honour them by picking the right actor to play them—while making a link between the actors who played these characters in the first seasons.”
She also revealed it’s unlikely they’ll cast a big name to be on the show, despite having Oscar winner Olivia Colman play the Queen.
“We’re unlikely to cast a major movie star. It’s quite interesting and fun to try and find new or new-ish talent. When we cast Claire and Vanessa, they had done loads of really good work, but they weren’t very well-known to this kind of worldwide audience—which was great, because they totally owned the characters without too much baggage”, she revealed.
“Charles, Camilla, and Anne are going to be pretty interesting characters to follow, because they are just coming into their own. We’ve cast a pretty wide net for these new young characters.”
