Sharon Stone has criticized female healthcare as 'violently oppressive' in a heartbreaking statement about her nine miscarriages.
The Basic Instinct star has called for total reform in how society treats miscarriage, after recalling her own experience of the devastating occurrence.
Writing beneath an Instagram post in which Dancing with the Stars' Peta Murgatroyd, 35, shared details of her pregnancy loss, Sharon revealed that she herself had been through the painful ordeal nine times.
"We, as females don’t have a forum to discuss the profundity of this loss. I lost nine children by miscarriage,' she said in the lengthy comment.
The revelation sees the 64-year-old join a list of other brave celebrities, including the Duchess of Sussex, to speak publicly about the sensitive issue. Meghan Markle revealed she had a miscarriage in the summer after giving birth to Archie, calling the loss an 'unbearable grief' that is 'experienced by many but talked about by few.'
Sharon, who now has three adoptive sons aged 22, 16, and 15, echoed this sentiment in her post.
"It is no small thing, physically nor emotionally, yet we are made to feel it is something to bear alone and secretly with some kind of sense of failure. Instead of receiving the much-needed compassion and empathy and healing which we so need.
“Female health and wellness left to the care of the male ideology has become lax at best, ignorant in fact, and violently oppressive in effort.”
Last year, Sharon revealed that her final pregnancy saw her endure "36 hours of labor without giving birth."
"The nurses even stayed on their day off with me. Without her I would have been alone," she wrote in her 2021 memoir, The Beauty of Living Twice.
Who are Sharon Stone's children?
Sharon Stone is the proud mother of three boys, whom she lives with in Beverly Hills in a lavishly renovated mansion.
The Basic Instinct star adopted her first son, Roan Joseph, with American journalist Phil Bronstein in 2000, after discovering she couldn't safely reproduce due to an autoimmune disease and endometriosis. The couple became embroiled in a tight custody battle for Roan following their divorce four years later, resulting in the judge awarding full physical custody to Phil and monthly visitation rights to Sharon.
In 2004, she adopted her second son, Laird Vonne Stone, from an 'unknown and unrelated parents' in Texas. She expanded her family once again in 2006, adopting her third child, Quinn Kelly Stone.
Sharon gushed about the joys of motherhood in a 2017 interview with HollywoodLife, revealing that her passion for the job overrides any obstacles she might face.
"I don’t think parenting is hard because I love parenting, and I think the things that you love and are dedicated to aren’t hard even when they are complicated,” Sharon told HollywoodLife in a 2017 interview.
The Cold Steel spoke fondly of her children again in 2019, penning an opinion piece for Vogue about her journey towards having a family.
"I’m now a single mother with three adopted sons, and it has been the great privilege of my life to raise them," she wrote. "When you adopt, you realise any child could be your child, any person could be your relative. After that you never see the world in the same way again. I’m connected to everyone on this planet. And that’s a miracle in and of itself."
