Book Of The Month: How Rude! Modern Manners Defined

by Alice Palmer on Wednesday, 17 October 2012

Sometimes it seems like anything goes, from texting at the dinner table to loud music on a train - and modern life can leave you wondering what happened to good manners!

A survey commissioned by supermarket Waitrose found that good manners are slipping - 72% of those polled thought people have become more rude over the last decade, findings that fit neatly with the launch of their new book, How Rude! Modern Manners Defined.

To celebrate 75 years in the John Lewis Partnership, Waitrose has asked leading writers from Alexander McCall Smith to Ruby Wax for their take on modern manners - and we love the witty results! The neat book is perfect for dipping into, a collection of short pieces examining everyday etiquette from meeting and greeting (one kiss or two?) to good sportsmanship.

Here at w&h we think it can never hurt to be reminded of the value of simple good manners - and we love the pithy take on British manners in How Rude! Modern Manners Defined, from some of our sharpest writers.

How Rude! Modern Manners Defined (£8.99) is now on sale in Waitrose shops or from waitrose.com as part of an online grocery order.
