Sail Lofts, Cornwall

by Jane Hayward on Friday, 3 April 2009

The wonderful light that first attracted artists to North Cornwall’s creative hub is dazzling in May. It’s also when to book the area’s chicest cottages, as they’re fiercely fought over in summer.

Where to stay: This year’s smartest newcomers are Sail Lofts, 12 funky five-star apartments seconds from Porthmeor Beach. You’ll love their style-mag design and practical extras, such as wet rooms with showers. Particularly gorgeous is two-bed Slipway, which opens on to an Atlantic-view balcony.

On the waterfront: Make the beaches your focus, and start the day with cappuccinos on sandside Porthminster Café (porthminstercafe.co.uk). For a drive that takes in England’s best waterfront scenery, follow the coast road to Land’s End and Penzance.

Delicious food: Alba (thealbarestaurant.com) serves up fishy dishes such as Tian of Cornish crab and brill to complement its bay views, for around £30pp. Cooking at home? Snap up local scallops at Stevens (mstevensandson.co.uk).

What it costs: From £382 for a week’s stay in a one-bedroom apartment; from £1,320 for Slipway. Call 01736-799175; thesaillofts.co.uk
