Using this Lelo wand isn't too different from using a bullet vibrator, to be honest - it's just a little larger. There are 10 vibrating modes to choose from, navigated via two buttons on the shaft and, once the body wand massager is charged up, the intensity of some of these settings is incredible. Its mammoth size and weight won't be for everyone, so be sure to check the dimensions before you invest, but when it comes to powerful vibrations, versatility, and design, this toy is almost unmatched. 

This wand vibrator comes with interchangeable two heads: a classic bulb-shaped head that allows for traditional clitoris-focused stimulation, as you might expect from a wand vibrator, and a head designed for internal G-spot stimulation. There's only one downside to the device, says Donna. "I noticed that the white silicone marks more than some other toys I have. For example, I put the head down on my dresser to dry after cleaning it and obviously I'd dropped some foundation or similar on the dress as it picked up the colour immediately. It's still a great toy in its own right though, with three distinct speed settings and a flexible neck to help you find the spot that works best. 

I found it very simple to use with the small slider on the handle making it easy to notch up various intensity levels and the small size of the toy not only makes it a great choice for anyone put off by the larger wand vibratos, but it's more precise in its stimulation than others. It's also, thanks to the size, very easy to tuck away discreetly and store between uses.

Unlike the other wand vibrators on this list, however, the Lovehoney 3-Speed Micro Magic Wand Vibrator is battery-operated. This keeps the cost of the toy down but means you'll have to be on the lookout for low battery and be sure to keep some spares on hand when using this toy - there's nothing more annoying than the slow whir of a vibrator you were planning to use.

The Wand by We-Vibe is an XXL choice with an ultra-flexible neck for added versatility and two attachments. It made the top pick for a quiet wand vibrator thanks to the Smart Silence function though, something I've found to be pretty unique to We-Vibe's excellent range of toys. The wand will only buzz when it comes in contact with the skin thanks to the clever sensor on the head that makes sure the vibes only begin when you want them to. For me, this is a great feature as it stops any unnecessary buzzing or louder vibrations that occur when the toy accidentally comes in contact with another surface. 

The two attachments that come with the toy add a layer of versatility that's not required to make this a great toy but it does offer something a bit different. One of the heads focuses on intense clitoral stimulation, while the other provides smooth, stroke-like stimulation. The vibrators with these are excellent even in the softer settings, I found, so they can help you climax very quickly should you want to. 

Other unique features of The Wand worth noting are the two controllable buttons. This clever design is a hybrid of a typical wand vibrator and rabbit vibrator with bunny ears where the bulbous head would normally be. "This is the most premium vibrator overall in my collection," says our tester Laura. "The silicone material feels so silky and soft underhand, making holding the toy a pleasure on its own. [I have the blue version] and I love the colour, it's very different from a lot of other vibrators. The toy does feel heavy to hold and if you were using it for more than a couple of minutes, you'd get some kind of wrist strain as the head of the toy is heavier than the end of it. But to be honest, I don't think anyone is lasting that long [with this vibrator]."

How we tried and tested the best wand vibrators

When deciding on our selection of the best wand vibrators, we enlisted the help of two experts: Gigi Engle, ACS, certified sex educator, and Nadia Deen, a sex educator and multi-disciplinary product designer in the pleasure space. They suggested we test vibrators with a wide range of uses and features, highlighting a couple of factors for us to consider (as highlighted below), since everyone is different when it comes to what works in the bedroom. "Unlike a smaller bullet vibrator, wands offer broader stimulation, meaning they cover a wider area, and therefore give you more chance of an orgasm," says Deen, who is also the founder of AM Appointment.

"Don't be afraid to get creative with what you like," adds Engle, who is also the author of All The F*cking Mistakes: a guide to sex, love, and life. "You can use it alone, as part of mutual masturbation, or in tandem with a partner."

Following this, we collected a selection from top brands, including Le Wand, Lovehoney, LELO, We-Vibe, and Svakom. When testing, with the experts' comments in mind, we considered these key factors. 

• Design: As noted, there are so many different designs of wand vibrators out there. We tested a selection but only the designs that were most beneficial made it onto our list. There's no point in having all the bells and whistles if the toy misses the point.
