The Archbishop of Canterbury breaks silence on Meghan and Harry secret wedding rumours
Justin Welby, the Archbishop of Canterbury has spoken out about the rumours surrounding Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's secret wedding
The Archbishop of Canterbury has spoken up about Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's official wedding date, after confusion about the couple having a secret second wedding.
• Following Prince Harry and Meghan’s interview with Oprah, there has been a lot of confusion about the couple's secret wedding before their big royal wedding.
• It has now been confirmed by the Archbishop of Canterbury that the couple’s official wedding took place on Saturday 19th May 2018.

In an interview with Oprah, Meghan and Harry revealed that they were secretly married in a private ceremony before their big royal wedding. Meghan told Oprah, “You know, three days before our wedding, we got married. No one knows that.”
She continued to say, “we called the Archbishop and we just said, look, this thing, this spectacle is for the world. But we want our union between us, so the vows that we have framed in our room are just the two of us in our backyard with the Archbishop of Canterbury.”
A Royal official claimed Meghan and Harry didn’t get married days before their wedding. The former chief clerk at the Faculty office, Stephen Borton, told The Sun “I’m sorry, but Meghan is obviously confused and clearly misinformed. They did not marry three days earlier in front of the Archbishop of Canterbury.”
A royal representative then spoke on behalf of Meghan and Harry to clarify the rumours about their official wedding date. The representative told The Daily Beast, "The couple exchanged personal vows a few days before their official/legal wedding on May 19." This clarified that although the royal couple did have a personal ceremony in their garden, this was not their official wedding.
In a recent interview with La Repubblica, Reverend Justin revealed that the legal wedding for the couple did take place on Saturday, the official ceremony date, not three days before the event. Although the archbishop did add, "I won't say what happened at any other meetings."

He continued to say, "If any of you ever talk to a priest, you expect them to keep that talk confidential. It doesn’t matter who I'm talking to. I had a number of private and pastoral meetings with the Duke and Duchess before the wedding.”
The Archbishop confirmed that he would not have signed their wedding certificate with the wrong date if he had, in fact, married Meghan and Harry three days before the event. "The legal wedding was on Saturday. I signed the wedding certificate, which is a legal document, and I would have committed a serious criminal offence if I signed it knowing it was false," he said.
