Kate Middleton had hoped to keep the designer of her wedding dress a secret from the world until she married Prince William on 29 April 2011. The couple tied the knot in a romantic and majestic royal wedding (opens in new tab) ceremony at Westminster Abbey, watched by millions.
As soon as Kate stepped out of the black 1977 Rolls-Royce Phantom IV she arrived in, the eyes of the world were upon her stunning dress.
Designed by Sarah Burton, who was then creative director of Alexander McQueen, this plunge-front lace gown with its 2.7-metre train captured everyone’s imaginations. The overall reveal and entrance to the Abbey was undeniably spectacular.
Though a source has suggested that in the lead-up to the big day, Kate was left upset when her wedding dress secret was leaked.
What was Kate Middleton’s wedding dress secret?
Despite her hopes for the design and designer (opens in new tab) of her wedding dress to remain a secret, Kate Middleton didn’t quite get her wish. At the time The Sunday Times wrote of how: "A fashion source said that the dress will be a combination of Middleton’s own design ideas and Burton’s deep knowledge and understanding of high fashion."
Sarah Burton, however, is understood to have denied she was in fact the designer behind the future Duchess of Cambridge’s gown until the official announcement was made.
However, the leak of this information supposedly caused Kate disappointment.

During an interview on Channel 5 documentary, Secrets of the Royal Dressmakers, royal expert Katie Nicholl reportedly claimed: "Behind the scenes, I think that caused tears at the Palace because Kate had done everything she could to keep the wedding dress a secret."
Although this didn’t quite turn out as the Duchess might have hoped, she was nonetheless a stunning bride. Who could forget her graceful walk down the aisle on the arm of her proud father Michael Middleton (opens in new tab) towards her now-husband Prince William?
Recently Duchess Catherine, as she is now known, was named the ‘best fashion influencer’ for her lockdown wardrobe.
We can’t wait to see what Duchess Catherine wears in 2021!
