Prince William and Kate Middleton’s love story has captured the imaginations of royal fans worldwide since their relationship first went public in 2004. The long-term couple almost never met, though a last-minute decision changed everything after Kate decided not to attend the University of Edinburgh. Instead, her and William’s paths crossed at the University of St Andrews, where their close friendship later blossomed into something very special.
Now a classmate from their university days has suggested that even before they started dating, they “definitely had chemistry.” Speaking to PEOPLE for their William & Kate: 10 Joyous Years special edition, Laura Warshauer, a St Andrews student who lived in the same dorm as William and Kate, has stated that even back then, there were “small moments” between them.
“Whenever Kate was in the room, Will was obviously paying attention to her," Laura claimed. "When we'd be sitting at lunch in the dining hall, and the two of them would be talking, it was amazing to see how natural it was, how they had so much to say to each other.
“Looking back, there were all these small moments—certainly moments where I was like, 'Wow, this could really be something.'"
William and Kate shared a house with a couple of other students in their second year at university and later started dating. From there, their relationship went from strength to strength, and apart from a brief breakup in 2007, they have been happily together ever since.
Prince William proposed to Kate with Princess Diana’s stunning sapphire ring on a magical trip to Kenya in 2010. After announcing the news of their engagement to the world, William and Kate opened up about their relationship during an interview with ITV News’ Tom Bradby, revealing some surprising insights into those early days.
Prince William explained: “We were friends for over a year first, and it just sort of blossomed from then on. We just spent more time with each other and had a good giggle. Had lots of fun and realized we shared the same interests and just had a really good time. She’s got a really naughty sense of humor which kind of helps me because I’ve got a very dirty sense of humor.”
Kate laughed in response, going on to reveal that when she first met William, she went “bright red” and “sort of scuttled off, feeling very shy” about meeting him.
“It did take a bit of time for us to get to know each other,” she explained. “But we did become very close friends from quite early on.”
Prince William and Kate Middleton’s early days as friends seem to have laid the foundation for their strong relationship. This year the couple celebrated their 10th wedding anniversary on April 29, and they continue to carry out important engagements as senior members of the Royal Family.
