Strictly Come Dancing fans were left in tears after the spectacular opening of last night’s episode—and it looks like they’re still reaching for the tissues.
The BBC dance competition kicked off Movie Week on Sunday evening with an incredible ballroom routine by its professional dancers, culminating in a surprise transition from male/female to same-sex pairings.
Viewers were quick to share their emotional reaction to the beautiful production, after they'd digested the news of who left Strictly Come Dancing last night, of course.
The Bridgerton-style performance, which featured an instrumental version of Taylor Swift’s Love Story and Lover, was a proud statement on the reality show’s celebration of all sexual and romantic orientations. It comes shortly after it announced the inclusion of its long-overdue first-ever same-sex male couple to its Strictly Come Dancing 2021 lineup in August.
Amidst all the drama that has surrounded this year’s season, including the refusal of some Strictly dancers to get Covid-19 vaccine, the gorgeous performance was a welcome distraction for the show’s loyal viewers.

The performance even won the approval of some well-known British celebrities, including Deborah Meaden. The Dragons Den star took to Twitter to share her reaction —and to take a shot at those who refused to tune in because of their objection to same-sex couples.
Anyone not watching @bbcstrictly because they don’t like the idea of same sex couple are missing out on utter joy and wonderful dancing.October 10, 2021
The fairy-tale routine was opened by Strictly professional dancer Johannes Radebe, who beckoned his guests (the other dancers) to his extravagant ball.
After a stunning performance by male/female couples, the South African choreographer took to the floor where he invited new dancer Kai Widdrington to take his hand. The talented men danced together briefly before the rest of the troupe resumed their places—but this time, as same-sex couples.
After the performance aired, Kai paid tribute to Johannes on Instagram writing, "This moment has been years in the making and now on a show that we both desired to be a part of all those years ago, we get to dance together. Your spirit is a shining light and you are an example of a true friend that deserves everything that comes to him."
