Louis Theroux has granted all of our wishes and announced a new documentary with the working title Louis Theroux: The Cult of Joe Exotic, which will look into the original Netflix documentary that launched in 2020.

On 10th March 2020 the original documentary, Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness, launched on Netflix and the world was obsessed. Tiger King was the cultural reset of the first lockdown in the UK and now we are getting even more of the bizarre story!

This new documentary from Theroux will look at the media hype that surrounded Joe Exotic and the extraordinary events of the last year for the ‘Tiger King.’ The original documentary focused on the bizarre life of zoo owner Joe Exotic – real name Joseph Maldonado-Passage – whose numerous rivalries and unethical money-making schemes led him to lead a US Presidential campaign and left him jailed following a murder-for-hire case.

Since the documentary first aired, Joe Exotic has amassed legions of fans, many of whom believe he is innocent and should have been pardoned by Donald Trump during his presidency. Louis Theroux will investigate this media phenomenon and also look back at his previous interactions with Joe Exotic from 2011.

Louis Theroux first met Joe Exotic a decade ago on Louis’ documentary  America's Most Dangerous Pets. Louis revealed, “I spent eight or nine days filming at the park back in 2011, over the course of three separate visits. I'd forgotten how much we shot until I went back into the footage during lockdown. It's extraordinary how much was there.”

Louis went on to say that his new documentary will investigate the cult obsession with Joe Exotic and how the bizarre story has developed since the 2020 documentary. “Since then the story just got stranger and bigger, and in going back at the end of last year I uncovered a real-life drama that took me in directions I never could have expected.

“This is one of those quintessentially American stories, taking place in the heartland of Oklahoma, with a cast of characters almost too colourful and larger-than-life to be believed,” said Theroux about this upcoming project.
