On Monday 17th May the lockdown regulations in the UK will change. Here is exactly what we can and can’t do when the lockdown is eased. 

On 22nd February, the government announced a roadmap that would ease the lockdown restrictions that are in place.

This means that from Monday 17th May, the restrictions regarding lockdown in the UK will be revised. So here are all the possible questions that you might have about what the 17th May means for those of us in the UK…

Who can I meet up with from 17th May?

The government announced that “most legal restrictions on meeting others outdoors will be lifted. ” Although gatherings of over 30 people will remain illegal, there will be new regulations changes mean that people will now be allowed to gather outside, so you can now have a Summer BBQ as the weather heats up!

The rule of 6 or two households will now apply indoors, meaning that two households can sit down for a dinner, or a group of 5 of your closest friends can pop over for a chat.

Which businesses will be open from 17th May?

Various businesses will reopen following the change of restrictions on Monday 17th May 2021. The government announced, “Most businesses in all but the highest risk sectors will be able to reopen.” 

This means that indoor hospitality will now reopen, so we don’t have to keep going for drinks in the rain! Other businesses that will open include, indoor entertainment venues such as cinemas and children’s play areas, hotels, hostels and B&Bs; and indoor adult group sports and exercise classes.

Which events can I attend from 17th May?

It was also announced that sporting and entertainment events will be open at a reduced capacity. The guidelines state that larger events will be allowed to take place at indoor venues at either a capacity of 1,000 or half full, whichever number is lowest.

Similarly, outdoor events will now take place and are allowed a capacity of 4,000 or half full—whichever number is lowest. 

The guidelines also state that larger outdoor seated events that allow fans to be spread out, will have a capacity of 10,000, or a quarter full—whichever is lowest.

Can I go to funerals and weddings from the 17th May?

On 17th May, weddings, wakes, and receptions will increase to 30 guests as opposed to being cut off at 15 guests. Funerals will remain at 30 guests maximum. 

This new 30 limit will also apply to other significant events such as bar mitzvahs and christenings and wedding receptions.

Can I travel from 17th May?

It is unknown if foreign holidays will be permitted on the 17th May. Many expect that the government will release a new statement in early May about how the restrictions will affect travel. 

Since 12th April, domestic overnight stays for a single household have been permitted as of 17th May that number will increase to the Rule of 6.
