As someone who writes about rest for a living, I should be a better sleeper than I am. Over the years, I have picked up more bad habits than I would like to admit, so I decided it was time to properly reset my routine and tackle one of the biggest culprits: my pillow.

As a side and front sleeper, I often wake up with shoulder tension and a stiff neck, the result of awkward angles and poor support overnight. So, when the Eli & Elm pillow appeared during one of my late-night scrolls, it immediately caught my attention. Its shape and adjustable design promised relief for exactly the kind of issues I struggle with. A week later, I had one of the best pillows I've ever slept on on my bed.

The U-shaped design makes this the perfect pillow for neck pain and side sleepers. The curve creates space for your shoulder to sit naturally, rather than being compressed or forced forward, while the pillow supports your head in a way that keeps your neck aligned. It customised to your body shape in a way that standard rectangular pillows don't really do. Adding to this, you can also adjust the filling to fine-tune exactly how high or cushioned you want your head to be, only enhancing the special, customisable element of this pillow.

It is also well suited to anyone who struggles with overheating at night. The use of natural materials, particularly latex, helps with airflow and temperature regulation without relying on synthetic cooling treatments. This is something I have seen perform well across multiple tests, and it makes a real difference if you are prone to night sweats or fluctuating temperatures.

What is the Eli & Elm Side Sleeper Pillow made of?

One of the standout features of this pillow is its versatility. From the inside out, it is designed to adapt to you rather than forcing you to adapt to it. You can choose between latex and microfibre fillings, depending on your preferences. Latex offers a firmer, more supportive feel and is naturally breathable, making it particularly effective for staying cool overnight. Microfibre, on the other hand, provides a softer, more cushioned feel, although it can retain a little more heat.

The fill is fully adjustable, allowing you to remove or add as much as you need to achieve the right loft. This is a relatively recent innovation in the pillow market, but it is quickly becoming popular. No two sleepers are the same, and having the ability to customise height and density makes a significant difference to comfort and spinal alignment.

The pillow also comes with a crisp cotton cover that feels cool and smooth against the skin. While you could add a standard pillowcase over the top, the included cover fits perfectly and features a neat zip closure that keeps everything looking tidy. It also performs well in terms of breathability, staying fresh and cool throughout the night. Colour options are limited, but the classic white is clean, simple, and timeless.

What is the Eli & Elm Side Sleeper Pillow like to sleep on?

I am a sensitive sleeper, so I tend to approach any change to my routine with caution. That said, I switched to this pillow out of necessity. Front sleeping is not ideal, and side sleeping was leaving me with persistent shoulder pain, so something had to change.

The difference was noticeable from the first night. I initially used the pillow at its fullest loft to understand its maximum support. For me, it was slightly too high and firm, but that actually reassured me. It means that if you need a higher loft or more substantial support, this pillow can deliver it.

Over the following weeks, I experimented with removing and adjusting the fill until I found my ideal level, which ended up being around half full. Having that level of control feels like a luxury, and it raises a bigger question about why we settle for fixed-fill pillows at all. Comfort is deeply personal, and this allows you to tailor the pillow to your exact needs.

You will notice that this pillow is heavier than most, but that density works in its favour. It feels substantial, supportive, and cushioning in a way that lighter pillows often fail to achieve.

Is the Eli & Elm Side Sleeper Pillow cooling?

I tend to fluctuate in temperature overnight, so breathability is a priority for me. This pillow performs impressively well on that front, especially when up against the best cooling pillows. The cotton cover feels cool to the touch and remains fresh throughout the night, helping to wick moisture away from the skin efficiently. I have noticed that I wake up feeling less clammy compared to when I use pillows with synthetic covers.

Initially, I was sceptical. The density of the pillow made me assume it might trap heat, but that has not been my experience. The latex filling lives up to its reputation as a naturally cooling material, helping to regulate temperature and prevent overheating. It strikes a balance between support and airflow that is not always easy to achieve.

Is the Eli & Elm Side Sleeper Pillow easy to clean?

Eli & Elm provides clear and practical cleaning instructions for how to clean your pillow. The cotton cover can be unzipped and washed with your regular laundry, making everyday maintenance simple. For a deeper clean, you can also remove the filling and wash the outer casing separately, which helps keep everything feeling fresh over time.

Should you buy the Eli & Elm Side Sleeper Pillow?

If you are a side sleeper dealing with shoulder discomfort or someone who struggles to stay cool at night, this is a very worthwhile investment. It combines thoughtful design with practical features that improve sleep quality.

What sets it apart is the level of customisation. Being able to adjust the fill means you are not compromising on comfort, and that alone makes it stand out in a crowded market. Over time, that kind of tailored support can make a meaningful difference to how you feel when you wake up.

How we test pillows

Best cooling pillows piled together

At woman&home, we have a series of standardised tests that we put every pillow through. At a baseline, we test all the pillows for at least one month to get a good gauge of whether it makes consistent, physical differences to your sleep and neck pain. We also look at comfort levels and support; cleaning and maintenance; and the level of customisability. By the end of the review, you should have a clear idea of whether this is the one for you. If you still have questions, don't hesitate to email me. Or, you can take a look at our dedicated page for how we test pillows.
