However you like to exercise, putting on the best high-impact sports bra you can find is an essential part of getting ready. Sports bras are intended to reduce breast movement—to stop your breasts from getting in the way, and ward off back pain—and high-impact options are designed to support you during the most rigorous activity. What's more, allowing your cleavage to run free could cause long-term sagging and stretching.

Sourcing the best sport-friendly bra for your body and budget is as necessary as finding the best leggings and best running shoes. Unlike choosing the best bras for everyday wear, sports bras come with added comfort and clever bounce-proof technologies. To save you the effort—so you can channel all that into your training sessions—we've tried and tested the most supportive options that will allow you to move with confidence.

How we tested the best high-impact sports bras

Feel like you might need some extra support during your workouts? Great decision. Here's what we considered when coming up with our top high-impact sports bra recommendations:

  • Technology—what sets these high-impact options apart from regular best sports bras is their ability to keep everything in place, even as you squat jump, and burpee. Our testers thought about how each had been produced in order to be supportive during activities like running, spinning and HIIT, as well as if the material used was breathable and fast-drying.
  • Fit—while you want your sports bra to be snug, you don't want it to be so tight that your movement or breathing is in any way restricted. Our testers took into account how comfortably these items fitted—including whether anything dug in—and if there were extra features like adjustable straps and removable pads.
  • Design—the opportunity to slip on a stylish piece of gym kit can be some pretty great workout motivation in and of itself. We also thought about how aesthetically pleasing the bras were, including the range of color options and other details like zips and criss-cross back straps.
  • Price—chances are you'll be using your beloved high-impact sports bra rather regularly, so you'll want to invest in a product that's good quality and long-lasting. We've included more affordable options that are great value for money, as well as high-end alternatives if your budget can stretch a bit further.

There's a lot to love about this Lorna Jane THE ONE Sports Bra which has been designed with maximum support in mind. It has been engineered to prevent bouncing during high-impact workouts, and the curved under-bust seam lifts your cleavage up with flattering results—enhanced by zip and mesh detailing. It's made from the brand's clever Nothing 2 See Here™ fabric which uses light-blocking interlock technology to ensure that it won't become see-through. Our tester found that the bra kept everything nicely in place during an energetic HIIT session, and loved how the zip front opening made getting the bra on and off totally seamless. They also really rated the adjustable straps and back clasp that could be tweaked for a perfect fit. The straps do make a slight 'creaking' sound when you move, which probably won't be a problem for most in a noisy HIIT class or while on a run, but may be a little distracting if you're enlisting it for a peaceful stretch.

If you're on more of a budget, then the MP Women’s Power Ultra Sports Bra is a fantastic affordable option. It is from the brand's 'Power Ultra' range—an upgrade from the original 'Power' collection—where they have designed items with fabrics that are lighter, softer, and more opaque, so you don't need to worry about pushing yourself during training. Indeed, our tester loved how the bra's material tackled sweat—both through sweat-wicking and quick-drying technology, as well as perforated panels for enhanced ventilation. There's also, of course, the high-impact support that proved very handy during a rather bumpy cycle ride—and the adjustable straps and back clasp likewise kept things even more stable. However, the fit was still a bit less form-fitting than some of the more luxury options, but this packs a lot of brilliant features in for its modest price.

Great for the planet

Reasons to avoid

-
The high neckline may also feel restrictive for some

As you know, thinking about the planet is important when we're shopping for clothes—and not least gymwear. The Universal Performance High Neck Active Bra Top is as green as they come. The brand's entire range—which is handmade in small batches —features Polygiene technology that eliminates odor by preventing the growth of bacteria, so you can wash your activewear less frequently. Additionally, the material is virtually all recycled, and the packaging is fully recycled or made from eco-friendly, carbon-neutral sugar cane.

However, in addition to its multiple eco-credentials, this bra does exactly what it's supposed to, and keeps everything firmly in place while you exercise—in our tester's case, a fast-paced power yoga flow. They also loved the high neckline—which stops any spilling out, particularly while upside down—and rated how the fit was nice and snug but didn't chafe, thanks to a ribbed waistband and no seams. However, if you have a larger bust and high necklines tend to leave you feeling a bit restricted, then this might not be the one for you.

Better for those with an A-C cup size

The Havah Padded Sports Bra ticks a lot of boxes. It features removable pads, as well as wide elastic under breasts, thick straps, and a racerback design, for some quality support. A particular highlight for our tester was how luxuriously comfortable it was to work out in. The soft, four-way stretch fabric has been designed with flat seams and bias binding to prevent any rubbing, and the scoop neckline avoids any feelings of restriction. It also incorporates moisture-wicking technology, and there are more than 30 different colors and prints to choose from. Each bra is handmade, with designs created using vegan, eco-friendly inks. While the pads can be removed, the bra is most supportive if they are worn, and for those with smaller cleavage, it creates a flattering look. The brand suggests that the bra is best for those with A-C cups, so this is perhaps one to avoid if you have a bigger bust.

Mesh panels mean it's probably one to wear beneath a top

If you've got a bigger bust, then the Anita Active Air Control Deltapad Sports Bra has been made for you—quite literally. While many sports bras are sized along the lines of small, medium and large, this brand uses the same approach as to your regular bras, ensuring a closer fit. Additionally, unlike many sports bras which use compression to keep everything secure—and are usually best for smaller busts—this bra feature two distinct cups, known as encapsulation, which creates a better hold. Further support comes from the Delta Pad design, featuring patented double-layered foam cups, incorporating sweat-management technology as well as adjustable straps that increase with size range. The ultra-light mesh fabric allows for optimal air circulation. Our tester found that one thing to bear in mind is, if you usually double up your sports bra as a top, this bra is quite plunging and has sheer mesh detailing in parts—so this is probably best for those happy to wear a top over it.

The pads move around a little

While function is crucial when considering the best high-impact options, aesthetics are also important. The Pocket Sport Plein Air Bra combines both. Not only did our tester find it really supportive, but they also loved the colorful, geometric design—and the option of matching leggings. The removable pads brought additional comfort, and ensured everything stayed in place. Additionally, the cross-over straps—which are adjustable—as well as the back clasp, meant that it could be customized for an even more snug fit. Our tester used this bra during a session combining HIIT and strength training, during which they felt able to freely move. The only very small negative was that the pads themselves did sometimes shift about—so you need to make sure they are in the right position before warm-up.

Not adjustable

This Sundried Power Sports Bra is another brilliant option for those on a budget. It features thick, stretchy material for a snug feel and plenty of support during high-impact activities like running and tennis. There are removable pads, so those who would rather do without can, while others—perhaps with a smaller bust—can make the most of the flattering finish, which is enhanced by the textured paneling at the cups. There's also a wide chest band so not only will it not dig or rub, but it will also firmly stay in place. The fabric additionally features laser-cut holes for breathability and ventilation, so it feels comfortable during even the sweatiest of sessions. It's worth noting that, unlike other high-impact sports bras, the straps aren't adjustable—so you need to get your size right. For its price, it's a fantastic option.
