In her role as M&S’s Chief Compliments Officer, Gillian Anderson appeared on the British clothing brand's Instagram page to reveal that it’s been ‘empowering’ to be the CCO for the high street hero, and to share that she only says her iconic catchphrase ‘love that’ to someone who's clearly ‘put a lot of thought’ into their outfit.

Gillian could be seen wearing the satin polka dot flocked midi slip dress by M&S, paired with an oversized black blazer, which she wore draped over her shoulders for an effortlessly elegant and fluid finish.

The two pieces work to create a smart casual outfit that can transition from the office to date night with ease, and she finished off the look with a simple pair of black court pumps to keep to a sophisticated colour palette of black and deep brown. The result is beyond elegant, feeling muted and autumnal, as well as perfectly polished - what more could you want?

Shop Gillian Anderson's Timeless Look

When it comes to autumn outfit ideas, Gillian's is a look you’ll want to have on hand throughout the season. Its sleek, timeless appeal means it can be worn for date night outfits, as well as the office.

It’s the satin finish of the dress that really gives it a luxe appeal, with the simple scoop neckline and relaxed, slip silhouette lending it a really wearable finish. Without the figure-hugging shape that so many evening pieces share, this is a flattering style that has the added bonus of comfort, and it’s a style you’ll be able to dress down easily, with a T-shirt layered underneath and a pair of ankle boots turning this capsule wardrobe staple into an elevated, everyday item.

Of course, there’s also the polka dot finish that makes this classic piece a timely buy, too. While checks and animal prints are dominating autumn/winter fashion trends for 2026, the polka dots we saw dominate fashion throughout spring and summer remain a staple pattern this season. Without being too bold or busy, polka dots are a print that balances personality and neutrality, especially when in a colourway like this.
