Prince William will be joined by big stars including Ed Sheeran and Coldplay, as he announces the winners of the Earthshot Prize next weekend at a red carpet awards ceremony.

Prince William teased details on the award ceremony on Instagram this weekend, as he posted a picture with the hosts - Dermot O'Leary and Clara Amfo.

The Duke of Cambridge added, "Stay tuned for more exciting news from the @earthshotprize later today."

Dermot, Clara and William will be joined by celebrity guests including Ed Sheeran, Coldplay, Shawn Mendes, KSI, and Yemi Alade.

The ceremony, which Kate Middleton will also attend, will be televised from Alexandra Palace and will feature the 15 finalists. The event will finally reveal which five entrants have won the £1M prize money to develop their environmental ideas. This is hoping their concepts, if achieved by 2030, will improve life for generations to come.

Prince William has already been praised for the BBC documentary, The Earthshot Prize: Repairing Our Planet.

The Prince says in the documentary, "Our planet is now in crisis. It's delicately balanced systems are becoming more and more unstable with every passing year. So for the sake of future generations, let's act now.

"Let's take inspiration from the Moonshot and set ourselves a global challenge for this decade," he said. "A common goal to unite behind to mend our broken relationship with our planet and built a better future for all."

He concluded, "It's for this very reason that I launched the Earthshot Prize, the most ambitious environmental prize in history."

WHAT IS THE EARTHSHOT PRIZE?

The Earthshot Prize is an environmental award that was invented by the Duke of Cambridge. The Prince was inspired by former President John F. Kennedy’s 'Moonshot' which was a cause that united millions of people in the goal of putting a man on the moon.

The Earthshot prize is focused on five goals that are ambitious, but if achieved by 2030, will improve life for generations to come.

Those five goals are to; protect and restore nature, clean our air, revive our oceans, build a waste-free world, and fix our climate.

Every year for the next ten years, five people will be awarded a £1million prize. These prizes are given to those who have provided solutions to some of the world's greatest environmental problems.

The Earthshot Prize: Repairing Our Planet, debuted on BBC One at 6:05pm and is available to view on BBC iPlayer and Discovery Plus.
