Prince Charles to downsize? The future King is set to break tradition with ‘scaled back’ plans for the royal family
Prince Charles is next in line to the throne
Prince Charles plans to ‘downsize’ and remain living at Clarence House when he becomes King, a royal expert has claimed.
- Prince Charles could ditch Buckingham Palace and continue living at Clarence House.
- It forms part of the Prince of Wales’ plans to ‘scale back’ the royal family.
- It follows royal news that Kate Middleton’s title will be completely different when Prince Charles becomes King.
Prince Charles could be set to break 184 years of tradition when he ascends the throne, ditching Buckingham Palace in favour of his current home, Clarence House.
Royal commentator Duncan Larcombe revealed the news in his Woman column, writing, “After 200 years at the heart of the monarchy, Buckingham Palace’s days could be numbered when Charles becomes King.
“Rumours are gaining pace he will ditch the building to reside at Clarence House.”
Clarence House is the place Prince Charles has lived with Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall for many years. He also has homes at Highgrove, in Gloucestershire and Birkhall, in Scotland.
Things are set to look very different when the Prince of Wales becomes King as he plans to “cut down” the royal family. And this bold move could be just one in a string of many in him putting his mark on the role.
On why Charles could be making this decision, Larcombe explains, “Mothballing the vast palace could become a symbol of the future King’s desire to ‘scale back’ the monarchy. I think it’s a barmy idea.”

Prince Charles’ plans to streamline the monarchy have been on the cards for a “very long time” in order to “save costs”.
Royal biographer Angela Levin has suggested Charles will likely want to adjust the way the Royal Family is structured in the future, and is keen for “change”.
“Prince Charles has wanted for a very long time to cut the monarchy down to save costs and to make people be worth the money that they got from the taxpayer,” she explained during an interview on talkRADIO.
This could include culling members of the family who currently remain on the periphery.
“I imagine that that might be when Harry and Meghan are ditched from being members of the Royal Family,” Angela revealed.
“I think the outer edge, which the Queen has wanted to keep together for a very long time for sentimental reasons, which at her age she didn't really particularly want change, which is understandable.
“But he wants to change and I think he will do that.”
Prince Charles will ascend the throne when his mother passes away. Her Majesty the Queen—Britain’s longest serving Monarch—has made it clear she has no plans to abdicate.
