Kate Middleton ‘took control’ after Prince William’s attempt to ‘impress’ her ended in disaster
Prince William once hoped to win Kate Middleton’s heart with ‘fancy meals’ at university though they were often accompanied by ‘angst’...
Kate Middleton “took control” after Prince William’s attempt to impress his future wife in the early days of their blossoming romance ended in disaster.
- The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge’s love story first started at university and it was here that he used to attempt to cook her “amazing fancy meals”.
- Sadly things used to end with things benign burnt or over spilling, leading to Kate Middleton “trying to help” to save the meal.
- This royal news comes as it was revealed Kate Middleton and Prince William have ‘hands full’ with Windsor move but are ‘ready’ to leave London according to a family member.
The extended Royal Family are thought to have a number of traditions they follow when it comes to their food, from the Queen’s bizarre dinner rule to the common foods the royals can’t eat. Though whilst they might have delicious meals cooked for them, they’re not afraid to get in the kitchen themselves. It’s thought Prince Harry and Meghan Markle are likely successors to Prince Philip’s role as family barbecue master and who wouldn’t be tempted by Kate Middleton’s heatwave salad?
Prince William has also turned his hand to cooking and once revealed how Kate Middleton was often left "taking control of the whole situation" when his attempts to win her over ended in disaster. Opening up to ITV’s Tom Bradby after Prince William and Kate Middleton’s engagement was announced in 2010, the future King explained that elaborate meals weren’t really his forte…
Asked whether the Queen’s grandchild ever cooked, Duchess Kate shared that in the early days of them getting to know each other at the University of St Andrews, he had done so often. Though it seems things didn’t always go to plan in the kitchen as she described these meals as coming with a bit of “angst”.
“He did cook for me quite a bit at university,” the Duchess of Cambridge explained. “And it would always come with a bit of angst and a bit of anger if something had gone wrong.”
Thankfully for Prince William, the future Queen Consort used to come to the rescue as she disclosed, “I’d have to wander in and save something that was wrong.”
The Duke of Cambridge later admitted that over the years he’s got “better” but that when he was trying to “impress” Kate, he’d aim high with his culinary ambitions.

“I get quite lazy about cooking because, you know, when I come back from work and stuff it’s the last thing I want to do, really, is spend or lose time cooking,” he said, before adding, “But when I was trying to impress Kate, I was trying to cook these amazing fancy meals.”
Prince William then admitted ruefully, “All that would happen is I’d burn something, something would overspill, something would catch on fire and she’d be sitting in the background trying to help and basically taking control of the whole situation. So I was quite glad she was there at the time!”
Now over a decade later it remains to be seen whether Kate Middleton is still “taking control” of the kitchen situation at their residences at Kensington Palace and Anmer Hall. The couple supposedly had their Norfolk kitchen refurbished before they moved in and it’s claimed the Queen had a priceless reaction to their finished kitchen with reported communal family spaces.
So it seems that despite his earlier culinary disasters, Prince William and Kate Middleton do still enjoy spending time in their kitchen at home all these years later.
