Nicole Kidman looks back at Moulin Rouge with nostalgic photos

Kidman shared her favorite memories from the film in a series of pictures, prompted by the film's 20th anniversary

It's two decades since Nicole Kidman enchanted us in the musical film Moulin Rouge. To honor the Baz Luhrmann-directed movie, Nicole shared some pictures from the film on Instagram.

The sweet photos of her and co-star Ewan McGregor will transport you back to 2001,  when the film was released and Nicole stunned us with her performance as courtesan, Satine, and Ewan, her love interest, captured our hearts as Christian, a depressed poet who falls for her. The pair begin a forbidden romance, set against the lavish backdrop of fin de siècle Paris (the film won two Oscars in 2002 for Best Production Design and Best Costume Design).

Today we may be used to seeing Nicole in more serious roles, especially after seeing her trailer for The Nine Perfect Strangers, but this happy nostalgic moment reminded us that she's a versatile performer.

For the anniversary, Nicole shared photos from the film on her Instagram, plus some of her and Ewan off-duty. The costumes are just as dazzling as when we first saw them in theaters, and, even decades later, you can still see the chemistry between the two leads.

The Big Little Lies actress also paired the photos with a thoughtful caption about her time on the film and one of the best messages we can take from the movie.

"Some of my favorite memories from #MoulinRouge! ✨ The greatest thing you’ll ever learn is just to love, and be loved in return," she wrote.

In 2001, Moulin Rouge met with high praise, scoring eight Academy Award nominations, including one for best picture. In July 2019, the film was even made into a Broadway musical: Nicole visited the show with her husband, country singer Keith Urban.

It's clear the actress holds the film close to her heart: this isn't the first time she has paid tribute. In another social media post, Nicole posted a video to her Instagram of her and Keith singing Your Song, which was one of the songs featured in the movie.

"A little backstage moment before heading to Monterey," she captioned the post.
