Michaela Coel made history at the Primetime Emmys 2021, becoming the first-ever black woman to win the award for Best Writing in a Limited Series of Anthology with her powerful series, I May Destroy You.

The multi-talented British actor and writer delivered a momentous statement upon receiving the accolade for her groundbreaking BBC series, which was met with critical acclaim upon its premiere in June 2020. Based on her own experience of sexual assault, the hard-hitting drama sees Michaela star as Arabella Essiedu, a London novelist trying to rebuild her life in the aftermath of a rape.

In her acceptance speech on Sunday night, Michaela shared some words of encouragement with her fellow screenwriters, before addressing viewers who have also survived a sexual assault.

“Write the tale that scares you,” she read from her notes. “That makes you feel uncertain. That isn’t comfortable. I dare you. In a world that entices us to browse through the lives of others to help us better determine how we feel about ourselves, and to, in turn, feel the need to be constantly visible, for visibility, these days, seems to somehow equate to success, do not be afraid to disappear—from it, from us, for a while, and see what comes to you in the silence.”

After thanking her creative team for "two of the best years of my life", Michaela concluded her 48 second-long message by dedicating the story of I May Destroy You to “every single survivor of sexual assault.”

She also made waves with her gorgeous outfit—a neon yellow Christopher John Rogers design paired with gold and white Alighieri earrings and a diamond necklace. The customized gown consisted of two pieces—a bralette top that expanded into a billowing silk bow at the back and a fitted, ankle-length skirt in cotton twill. Coel reached peak highlighter vibes with matching yellow heels and some vibrant yellow eye makeup, proving she's not afraid to shine like the sun on the red carpet.
