It's official, Jennifer Lopez and Alex Rodriguez are calling off their engagement. We're devested over the news too, especially as it comes not too long after the couple announced they were going to try and "[work] through some things."

If you were still holding onto hope that the couple will reconcile, we're sad to report that the star-studded couple has released a joint statement cementing their split.

"We have realized we are better as friends and look forward to remaining so. We will continue to work together and support each other on our shared businesses and projects," the statement read. "We wish the best for each other, and one another's children. Out of respect for them, the only other comment we have is to say is thank you to everyone who has sent kind words and support."

Back in early March, the couple first announced the end of their engagement but had left us with a slice of hope, saying they were "working through some things."

During that time, they apparently were not "broken up," a source revealed to PEOPLE, but they were close to calling it quits.

"They never officially broke up and talked about it but are still together. They hit a rough patch. But we're not broken up," a close source to the pair told the outlet. "She's working in the Dominican Republic, and he's in Miami, so it's tough seeing each other, especially with quarantining and COVID, but they want to try to stay together."

That's not to say that the two didn't try to make things work. Another source told PEOPLE that Alex even flew out to the Dominican Republic while JLo was filming her new movie, Shotgun Wedding. So, the couple was "doing everything they can to prioritize their relationship."

Wedding trouble also arose once the COVID-19 pandemic hit. Due to restrictions on social gatherings, the couple had to postpone their wedding twice. JLo opened up to Elle about this earlier in the year, describing how this impacted them.

"We postponed the wedding twice. We had planned what we really, really wanted to do, [but] I don't know if we'll be able to re-create that," she said. "We canceled it, and since then, we haven't really talked about it. There's no rush. We want to do it right when we can do it."

This just goes to show that even celebrities face relationship problems. People change, and so do our priorities over time. While we're sad to see the pair split, we're happy to see they're ending on amicable terms.
