Met Gala 2022 moments you may have missed—from body transformations dubbed 'unhealthy' to people dressed the same and drawn on mustaches
Met Gala 2022 had highlights in abundance, from historical gowns to more avant-garde looks, and even a fake mustache!
Fashion fans are always eager to ogle the best Met Gala looks. The 2022 Metropolitan Museum of Art's Costume Institute benefit is known as 'fashion's biggest night out,' and those lucky enough to attend always dress to impress. This year's glamorous offerings included Cara Delevigne's nude Met Gala look, among other extravagant outfit choices.
The event is organized annually, always on the first Monday in May, by the indomitable editor in chief of Vogue, Anna Wintour. The icon of fashion and journalism oversees the tight as a whistle guest list, theme, and everything in between for the event. Each year, there's a theme to adhere to and for 2022, it was a celebration of American design, themed, ‘gilded glamour.’
NPR reports that big names usually come for free, but for invitees who have to cough up the dough for their tickets, it's $35,000 a pop, and $200,000 to $300,000 for a table.
With a price tag like that, you know you better stand out and this year's attendees did—for good and bad reasons.
1. Ryan Reynolds reacts to Blake Lively's costume change

Blake Lively was a co-chair of this year's event, which absolutely warranted her stand-out dress you've likely seen mentioned in countless lists of the Met Gala 2022 best dressed. Although the Versace copper-colored strapless number brought all the va-va-voom, she did one better when three stylists helped unfurl the back of the gown, changing it completely.
Although the moment was all about her incredible, surprising tear-away, which turned her copper gown into a stunning turquoise one—fans couldn't help but notice her husband. It wasn't Ryan Reynold's smart tuxedo that drew attention, but his adorable reaction to his wife's dramatic costume change.

Blake's dress, according to the Independent, is an homage to NYC's most iconic ladies—the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, and Grand Central Station. Looking at Ryan's adorable smile and mini round of applause for his wife, however, makes it pretty clear there's only one iconic lady for him—his wife!
2. Jessie Buckley's mustache
Irish actor Jessie Buckley chose to eschew the boundaries of gender with her look, picking a stunning tailored suit from Schiaparelli, paired with a shirt and tie.
However, all people could notice was the mustache she'd drawn on her face. The Oscar-nominated actor subverted the concept of gendered style, the gilded age, and ideals of feminine beauty. What's fashion if it's not pushing the boundaries, right?
3. Kim Kardashian's shocking weight loss revalation
Kim Kardashian's Met Gala look nearly always splits opinion, but this year she went for a look that's both iconic and historic. She wore the iconic Bob Mackie gown, worn by Marilyn Monroe when she sang Happy Birthday to then-president, Jack F Kennedy.
Speaking to Vogue, the reality star said she wanted, “the most American thing you can think of. And that’s Marilyn Monroe." She continued, "for me, the most Marilyn Monroe moment is when she sang Happy Birthday to JFK, it was that look.”
“I did want a physical change too,” she added. As well as dying her hair platinum blonde, the star told the publication that she lost 16lbs (7kg) in less than a month to fit into the dress—which could not be altered.
“It was such a challenge,” she told Vogue. “It was like a role. I was determined to fit this. I would wear a sauna suit twice a day, run on the treadmill, completely cut out all sugar and all carbs, and just eat the cleanest veggies and protein."
Fans reacted in horror to her openness about the extreme weight loss with one tweeting, "Please think about the influence of what you say. Discussing dangerous and extreme weight loss is inappropriate and harmful, do better."
Getting a hold of the historic dress was a bit of a challenge, as it's housed in Ripley’s Believe It Or Not Museum in Orlando. Also, having sold for $4.8M at Julien's auctions back in 2016—is the most expensive dress bought at auction to date. The dress was delivered to her via private jet, with security guards to ensure its safety.
4. Two guests dressed the same
Every fashionista's worst nightmare, right?! Well, actually this was intentional. Jared Leto and Gucci designer Alessandro Michele arrived with matching suits, hairstyles, and even posed the same too!
Their matching gold suits and red bow ties added an extra slick of glam to their looks and fashion fans were hooked.

5. Vanessa Hudgens' Marilyn moment
Actor Vanessa Hudgens wore a stunning sheer black gown, from Moschino. The actor paid tribute to the famous moment in which Marilyn Monroe's skirt was blown up by the blast from a subway vent, during the filming of The Seven Year Itch.
Vanessa was hosting the red carpet for the event and needless to say, she made her mark among the best dressed of the evening.
6. Lizzo's unusual accesory
Superstar singer Lizzo is known for her incredible singing voice, high energy performances, and being a talented flautist. The international superstar took the gilded age theme pretty literally, bringing her 18-carat gold flute along with her on the red carpet.
Not just any old flute, this particular instrument is worth a remarkable $55,000 according to Classicfm, who reported that she entertained those in attendance with the opening lines of French composer Claude Debussy’s Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune.
7. Amy Schumer going back on her word
Comedian Amy Schumer previously claimed she was totally done with the event, reports the Independent, during an interview with Howard Stern. She sad at the time, "I have no interest in fashion. I don't care. I left earlier than I should have been allowed. I got to meet Beyoncé and she was like, 'Is this your first Met Gala?' And I was like, 'It's my last!'"
However, the star attended the event alongside her guest, climate activist Xiye Bastida, in an effort to give climate activism a huge global platform.
8. The Kardashian-Jenner clan missing court date to attend gala
Apart from it being the first time ever all of the Kardashian-Jenner clan attended the event together, another piece of info hit the news—their victory over Blac Chyna's defamation case against them.
Robert Kardashian Jr's ex, and mother of his daughter Dream, lost her case when the Los Angeles jury found that none of the famous family defamed her or interfered with her E! network contract.
USA Today reports that, despite being in attendance at the court hearings throughout, the Kardashian-Jenners hit the event. Kardashian attorney Michael G. Rhodes said the family was, 'exuberant,' when he called them with the news.
“They’re very pleased,” he said. “I hope they enjoy their gala in New York.”
9. Men-icures
This year's Met Gala event was, as always, about being out there with style. It also platformed plenty of fashion choices which smash up the idea of what people of different genders can or cannot wear.
Male guests at the event were seen wearing nail polish, and one guest, star of stage and screen Ben Platt, even had nail extensions.
Why the hell not? It's fashion's biggest night after all!
