That’s exactly what our 70-something tester wanted to tackle when she tested this Philips 5000 Series Hand Blender – a machine designed to take the place of multiple appliances without cutting any corners when it comes to efficient food preparation. Design

If you're a keen cook, you'll know what a difference well-designed appliances make – and how much of a headache it is to switch back and forth between multiple gadgets or attachments. It’s not just the space they take up, but the constant stopping and starting: hunting for the right attachment, assembling it, then cleaning it and putting it all away again.

Built to tackle a wide range of everyday food prep tasks from blending soups and smoothies to chopping herbs or whipping cream, this is surprisingly straightforward to use for such a versatile gadget – each attachment clicks easily into place, Hilary tells us, which means you can move seamlessly from one task to the next with minimal fuss or mess.

With a smart black and brushed chrome finish, it's a well-made, premium piece of kitchen kit – that's clear from the moment you unbox it. Hilary also found it comfortable to hold and very easy to control – important for anyone who suffers with hand or wrist pain.

The pulse button is responsive without being stiff, which makes a difference if you’re using it frequently or repetitively during meal prep. Best of all, the controls are intuitive – Hilary reports that she barely needed to look at the instructions.

Hilary put it to work straight away in her kitchen, starting with a wild garlic pesto made from locally foraged ingredients. Instead of reaching for multiple tools, she was able to prep everything using the same unit – blending, chopping and adjusting textures as she went – which made the whole process feel quicker and more intuitive. "It handled every task easily, producing a smooth, even texture with minimal effort," she says.

“The mini chopper came into its own for smaller quantities,” Hilary adds, particularly when preparing herbs, nuts or curry pastes. “It’s much easier than getting out a full-sized food processor for jobs like that.”

It’s the whisk attachment, though, that earned this blender a permanent place in Hilary's kitchen. Tasks that usually feel messy or fiddly – like whipping cream – were noticeably easier. “I usually cover the bowl with a tea towel to stop it splattering everywhere, but this kept everything contained.”

Ease of use

The real turning point came a few days into testing, when Hilary realised she’d stopped reaching for her old chopper altogether. Instead of juggling multiple appliances, she now had one tool that did the job faster and with less effort – and took up a fraction of the space.

"It frees up valuable cupboard space and removes the frustration of digging out multiple gadgets every time you cook."

Is it worth it?

No product is perfect, and this has a couple of tiny but forgivable flaws. "The whisk attachment needs to be pulled loose rather than released with a button, which can feel slightly awkward at first, and the product is only available in one colour," Hilary says, adding that neither issue significantly detracted from the overall experience.

In terms of value, this is a mid-range purchase – it's certainly not the cheapest option, but far from overpriced when you consider it can replace three separate appliances. If you're streamlining your collection of kitchen appliances or thinking of upgrading your whisk, blender or chopper for something faster and more efficient, this is a worthwhile investment.
